I currently have a 1992 2.8L TD MU. She is an absolute plum and could see myself in it for the duration of my life - Enter the sounds of little feet. It just isn't practical as a family car so it looks like I'll need to move up. The problem is... to what? I need to stick to Turbo Diesel, I know, love and trust Isuzu and I need 4 doors. A power increase would be beaut as I do alot of towing.
My thoughts at present are the :
Wizard 3.0L TD - Not sure about the reliabilty of the engine, also rare in manual, really would like something with a larger set of feet from the factory.
Terrano 3.2L TD - Again extremely rare in manual, smaller feet than the MU but I know the engine is tough.
4 Door MU 3.1L TD - Not too sure about the engine etc.
Any thoughts, ideas would be appreciated. Basically I want what I've already got, with regard reliability, and a couple of extra doors.
Thanks for any insight.

Sounds to me like a 94-96 Wizard with the 3.1 4JG2 motor. More power than your 2.8, 4 doors and just as reliable. J

Hi Simon, I see you have a Aussie e'mail address, so was wandering where you can get these vehicles? If you have a way of importing them Iam sure you will have a lot of friends from Club Isuzu in Aus. In case it is a vehicle second hand there has been a Wizard at a yard in the Gold Coast for sale for some time I think about $16990 with the 4jg2 motor. Cheers Bruce.

4 door Mu ?? isnt that a wizard? At least the brand is right. I like the wizard and its high on the list when my Bighorn croaks. I agree shy away from the 4jz1 engine for now They may of fixed its main issues but it still might be wise to wait a year or 2 to see if they still have major issues. If it could be garenteed reliable then 135kw and 35 miles per gallon must be the way to go. I dont know what Aussi prices are like but a 97 wizard is around $13000 with 4jb1 a 98 is still around 20000. Ive never liked the look of the Terrano esspecialy the rear door handles but like you say there engines are harrd to kill. Ive only ever heard of one dying before its time and that was probably due to no corrosion inhibitor in the radiator. The auto is strong as long as you change the factor trans cooler for an after market one (factory one has a design fault and blocks ) They are capable off road but need regular wheel alignment. The Isuzu based options all share much the same mechanicals so you already know all its good and bad points

I have a 1998 3.1TD Wizard with an auto. It is a bit of an odd one as it has electronic injection. Having owned it for a couple of years now my choice would be a '97ish 3.1TD (without the electronic injection) and a manual box. Non electronic is easier to play with for more horse power and a 5 speed would be better for travelling on the road, although I do like the auto for off road.

Mmmmm
Thanks for those comments. Looks like a Wizard is the way to go, now I've just got to try and find a manual.
To answer your question Bruce, I travel to Japan a few times a year and have friends who will keep it for 12 months and then send it down to me - The only way to get one into Oz now.
Thanks again.

Thanks for that Simon, might catch up with you on one of the club trips with your new Wizard. If you an get one with the 3.0 litre that has had the injectors done I would go for it. Heaps more power and you can get a chip for them as well, try 147 kw and 450 nm's. Cheers Bruce.

Would be quite cautious about buying a later model Terrano if you do off roading. Have several clubmates with them and even earlier models are weak in the steering system - rods etc. Clubbies I know have welded extra structure into system to stop them bending and breaking so often. And the models from 1994 are weaker still as they changed to rack and pinion car type steering. Also have done many many trips with Terranos and they are not as good off road as the basic Isuzu - 10-15% less power in earlier models.
Nice comfortable and reliable road units except for the auto trans but you'd be better off with Isuzu if much offroad to be done - Mike.

Hi Roscoe, Safari make the Dtronic chip, and there is tunit that Berrima dIesel sell in Australia. They plug in to the computer on the motor, you are suppose to be able to do it yourself. Cost is around $1500 to $2000, this of course is for electronic motors. I'll try to find some web sites for them for you. Cheers Bruce ps can you buy second hand 4jx1 motors in NZ?

Thanks for the info Bruce, Im going to get a mechanical warranty for this vehicle so I better be carefull about engine mods.
This motor has got all the power I need in reality so I think I'll leave it as it is.
It would probably make more sence to intercool it first anyway.
Cheers
