Open road cruising at speed limit expect 33 - 35 mpg in a manual and only slightly worse for an auto. Round town this will drop as will any car but diesels are more forgiving in this regard than petrol cars even with the extra weight of a solid 4wd. Off road depends a lot on the type of off road. Hard gravel tracks at low to medium speed can give better than open road ecconomy but soft sand and mud will eat fuel I have used as much fuel in 20km of soft beach as I did in the 200km drive to and from the beach. At least with a 83 liter fuel tank you dont need the top ups that petrols do.

My swb 2.8 averaged 32mpg over 5 years - the best economy I know of for 4x4 diesels.

Hi Dude, I'm in perth and with the 2.8 td you should get around 750-850 k's per tank on road depending on how you drive them. dont believe the fuel gauge as it will sit below the empty line for around 200 k's, i reset the trip button on the speedo every time i fill up, i ran out of fuel once and it was on 850 k's. i usualy fill up at around 750. they have an 80L tank in them. hope this helps.

80 litres?? Man, alive.....I wasn't aware of that. I know what you mean by the gauge sitting at empty if that is the case, at empty, I have used up to around 65 litres and have travelled usually around 750kms. Not bad mileage in my opinion.

I have heard of over 1000km on a tankfull in a 2.8 Mu on a single long trip but this requires careful driving and an honest eye on speed. My best in the bighorn measured between fills is 8.3L per 100km which suggests that 1000km is possible even in the shed shaped bighorn but I wont ever be proving it.

I have found with mine that if you can sit at or below 3000rpm on a long trip, they are especially economical, I can get nearly 800kms to a "tank" ie to the empty mark which isn't necessarily the case.
