Just looking at an 84 jackaroo in good all round condition as a possible bunny shooting truck. It has an isuzu 2.0l petrol motor - a variant I wasn't aware of as most here are the 2.6 petrol engines which seemed pretty good though v thirsty.
The motor is a G200Z, seems in good nick with a recond head lately. Does anyone know of this motor - can't find hp/kw details - and just any opinions from experience of them. A tidy unit with lsd, good tyres etc for less than a grand sounds ok at first glance.
Appreciate advice - Mike.

the G200z has 65kW at the flywheel, based on the G161z motor in the gemini. Very easy to work on

Cool - that's about 88hp, about the same as the 2.8 hilux - should be enough to putter around. I think its about 10kw more than the little 2.3 turbo diesel of that vintage which I think produces about 55kw or 75hp. Anyone know about the motor - if it is any good?

The biggest problem the G series motors had was corrosion in the head if it wasn’t looked after properly. I have a G180z with a T04B and efi it goes real nice in the Gemini and had a G200z in my rally car it got caned from day 1 and never missed a beat

Interesting-this one has just had a new head gasket and head job in the last few weeks. I'll have a good look at it tonight. I wonder if the 2.0L Jack shares the same running gear as the old diesel 2.3s. Probably the same CVs etc. anyway. Thanks Mike P.S. Hows that turbo going that we got for you from NZ?

that turbo is great I don't think there is any difference in the drive train apart from the disesel box has the starter on the left and the petrol has it on the right. i know the 2.6 4ze1 will bolt up to a G200z box.

Had a good look at the little 2.0 and it seems fine. One thing I notice is front end - suspension and cvs etc are so lightly built - almost spindly compared to my 2.8. Looks like one good whack would do alot of damage whereas the 2.8 front end is very strongly built. Has anyone used one offroad to know how robust they are? I think as pig suggests the 2.3 diesel, the 2.0 and 2.6 petrol have much the same running gear.
Thanks Mike.

Well have had my last question answered! Remembered a friend had an early model jackaroo 10-15 years ago and gave him a call. Turns out he smashed the front end up badly ($1700 back then) in just 12 months of light to moderate off-roading, at which point he sold it because it was too lightly constructed for real off road use. So a suspicion is confirmed. They have nothing like far more solid front end construction of the mu or bighorn which can can take a fair pounding for years and still come through well. Early 80s jackaroos seem to be good vehicles with good petrol engines, but not for real offroading. Thanks for help
Mike.
