Hi Oleg. You might get some fairly tough responses on this one! Pajero diesels and running gear not well regarded but have heard the 2.8 is a significant improvement on earlier 2.3's and 2.5's. It would have to be. The later the model the better they get apparently.
A friend had a 2.5 lwb and it was not very durable. Another clubbie friend has a 92? swb with factory locker etc and it is a light and very capable off-roader, but again it seems prone to lots of maintenance. He says he does the front end every year - but he is pretty tough on it.The 2.8 model swb is nippy but hasn't the toughness of Isuzu, Toyota etc.
Perhaps a poll conducted by the Christchurch 4wd club members (not an Isuzu club) recently can sum it up for you. Question was: what are the most popular 4wd's?. Answer: 46 votes for Isuzu, 40 votes for Toyota, 26 votes for Nissan, and 9 votes for Mitsi. I'll leave you to think on this...Mike.

If you must go to the "other side" the later 2.5 motor is quite good (after 1990) if properly maintained from new The ones with the rear diff lock work well and they have all the bells and whistles. The Dog and Lemon guide says this of the 2.8 " the 2.8 diesel has a habit of sucking all the oil out of the sump destroying the engine" I thought the 2.8 was a good motor but they obviously disagree.

Yes Alan - the 92 Mitsi I mentioned above is the 2.5 - must be one of the last using that motor and has all the gear. Very useful vehicle, though the owner complains its a bit underpowered and costs a pile to repair- often.
Oleg, the guys comments are right on the money. If you have a choice, I wouldn't touch a Mitsi. If you want a tough and durable on and offroader, stay with the Isuzu bighorn or mu. Proven engineering and far stronger more reliable performers, which is why they are becoming very popular now with 4wd clubs, while the Mitsis are disappearing. Nobody wants them.
There used to be a tv ad that went "Don't you wish you had a Mitsubishi". The guys I know who've had them all ended up wishing they'd never heard of them.Good luck - Mike.

v6 pajero = new mortgage at each gas station. The 3000 is also prone to burning valves. The 3500 if it is the GDI is economical but it has only been around 2 years so reliability is unkown. The v6 is still more ecconomical than the 2 liter petrol turbo engine that some early pajeros had. I took one of these for a test drive and it used half a tank for a return trip Upper Hut to Wellington (60km /20liters)

Re 2much The Dog and Lemon Guide doesnt tell the whole story but that might be because they dont know. The Vauxle Frontera is an orphan of spare parts It has a Vauxel 2.4 petrol engine and the body is closer to the Holden Frontera than an Isuzu. None of the parts that cause problems are real Isuzu
