Hey all, I got a knocking noise coming from what sounds like the rear RH side of the diff. The knocking speeds up as the truck does and down when i slow down. Seems to be worse when going down hill but disappears when going up hill. I got a WOF yesterday and thought they might pick it up, but he said checked everthing on the WOF list and its all passed. He seems to think maybe the front leaf spring eye bush may be worn and need replacing. Could this be the source of the noise? Cheers

If it is the eye bush he should of faided it To check the bush you need to jack the car separatly from the axle so the spring has no load Then you can remove the pin and see the condition of the bushes. Expect fun and games refitting the pin if your springs have any side twist in them.(if not new and used off road they will have) My money on this one though would be on the drive shaft universal joints Get underneath and give them a good pull in every direction. Any movement means replacement. They are cheap. Other possibilities loose wheel, bad axle bearing or bad diff. If you can jack both sides off the ground it will be easier to track down

The noise seems to be worse when the the truck is cold, I noticed today that when the truck warms up the noise is gone.(might be a good time to mention bloody hard to hear over the noise of the MTR's on the rd!!) ;D Re: eye bush... Bloke said it wasnt worn enough to fail it but it did have a small amount of movement. Have had the universals checked and they're all good (not to much movement) Which leaves the axle bearing and diff to check. Do i need any special tools to get into the rear axle bearing??? HELP!!!!

You havnt bashed the exhaust by any chance?? If it goes when warm it could be touching somewhere. Getting the axle assembly out is quite easy. Just remove the complete brake caliper (not just the pad retainer) by the 2 large bolts then remove the disk (should be a hole to thread a m10 bolt in but a few hits with a hammer on a block of wood will release it) then undo the 4 bolts that are now visable. Whole assembly pulls out and can be taken to someone with a press to take the bearing off if this proves to be faulty. Dont heat it to remove it like someone had done by an inteligent mechanic a year or so ago. Axle and new bearing lasted 1 week with no off road driving before they broke. Check all the bolts are tight on the springs as well.

Well, I jacked the truck up... removed wheel, brakes etc on driver side (thats where the noise seemed to come from). It makes a little noise and has a little movement b4 the drive shaft starts to move. So i checked the other side took the wheel off, brakes etc and the brake disc fell off.. not sure if this is normal or not (builder not mechanic ;D:) ). when i put it back on i found the stud holes are not a snug (bout 1mm movement!!) and seems to make the same sort on noise. when tires on you cant hear the noise, with it off you can.. Question: Is it normal for the disc to fall off, if not, reasons why it did. What would cause the stud holes to elongate. & could this be making the noise?.. sounds like a good reason to install front and rear lokkas. ;D Cheers

Its realy only held in place by the wheel and wheel nuts but should be a tight fit. If the holes are not round definatly replace the disc. As to why this is a guess but I cant think of anything else. Are your studs straight. If bent I would expect a lot of vibration but worth checking by putting the wheel back on and spinning while watching the gap under the tyre to see if this changes. A loose wheel could also cause this but you would know this answer by now and maybe told us

Well i put in a new brake disk 2day.. and the noise is still there (sigh). Time for plan "B".. New diff bearing.. i dont suppose anyone would have a part number for this? plan "C" would be new diff so hope the bearing will fix it. I Also replaced the eye bush, old 1 was gud but changed it anyway.

Well plan B and C didnt work... new diff bearing and spider gears(2nd hand) werent the problem.. might try replacing the pinion bearing kit.. but if that fails what else could it be?? axles maybe?? The noise is definitely coming from inside the diff casing. Cheers

Try changing the complete diff head. I think Harry has a spare or 2 you could borrow in Tirau
