After going for a fourby on the weekend with a mate in his SWB Suzuki Stockman, i'm hanging to get a Mu again so i can out do him! Some of you might remember a post by me telling how i got talked out of a Mu. I've decided when regos up in April, i'm UPGRADING, but still have a few questions, What sort of km do you get out of the tank(and tank size)? Currently my 4runner only gets around 350 to a 60L tank. and will 32" tyres fit onto my Mu without any major suspension work? I think this is the only thing i want to keep before i dust my hands of Toyota Filth!! (oh and the winch) Cheers Boys, you were a great help in my last post.

The Mu has a 83 litre tank, from memory I used to get about 700-750km to empty, this was back when it was stock!!
32's should fit but depending on size of make could rub on the gard where the mud flap is on the front. A few guys on here are running that size so they should be able to help more.
Cheers

A 2.8 will do better than a 3.1, I get about 550-600 max from my 83ltrs on a run, and 32's should fit, $100 on some ext. shackles and a torsion bar crank will confirm that. J

My 3.1TD Auto MU is getting worse & worse economy.
Last fill up was all city driving and only got 530Kms from 73L. When I bought it 2.5 years ago I would easily get 600 before filling up.
Other than that and it being an Auto Ive got zero complaints of the MU.
Can anyonye tell me where the fuel pump & filter is so I can check them out.
Cheers, Graham.

The fuel filter won't help you much, if fact if it's restricting flow it will have the same effect as a very light foot. Should be good economy but real bad pick up or power.
Check the air filter, and if you haven't done it in a while do it reguardless. Thats more likely a cause of bad econnomy. Also run some injector cleaner through, preferably on a long run at 100km/h. Even at 100km/h mine doesn't really work, unless it's into a Canterbury nor wester (the kind that put trucks and caravans on their sides). If it's mostly doing city driving it probbably in need of a good run. Run at 100km/h or harder for an hour or so and they will often really start to "hum", much more freeer running

My MU around town returns the low 500's to a tank. I normally fill up with 70 ltrs but I'm a shocking lead foot so I'm happy with that. I replaced the air filter with a Unifilter which changed the sound of the motor for the better but I would be hard pushed to say it improved power & efficiency greatly. The injector cleaner is a good idea I used a US one with anti-'eveything' in it under Pete S's recommendations and it worked a treat on the exhaust output. But I forgot to change my fuel filter shortly afterwards and it died a death going up a hill. So make sure within a week or so you replace the filter cause it clogs up with all the crap from the tank & lines. J

Well its like my 94 auto 245/75/16 tyres could be the worst, and not being a lead foot, I’m only getting 450kms city driving and around 550 highway if lucky. Don’t know what’s going on but its NOT blowing smoke, no rough idle or lack of power. Have done new oil, oil filter and aftermarket air filter, and then had it on Dyno, the guy said he recalibrate the fuel pump but nothing changed in economy. Have done an injector clean in the tank so I guess the fuel filter is next to do ASAP and just installed a 2.5 inch exhaust. Do not know what else to do to about my bad economy

I've got the petrol 2.6 EFI in my Mu. Usually get around 500kms city driving from a full tank, and highway around 600km last i remember. As to tyres ive got 32" MTR's on and they fit without a prob. all the lift i currently have is a 50mm body lift. Hope this helps

On one occasion I was able to get over 800kms out of my 94 auto (15x10.5X31) before the fuel light was always on. This was achieved when driving at night, crusing at about 90km/h (1900rpm) on a relatively flat rd and never letting the tacho go over 2200. Good for the hip pocket but not much fun when you have KW's to play with.
I generally get around 600-700kms per 83 lts now based on my current driving habbits and usually drive till the fuel light comes.
Just to add a little info to the hot pot... Desiel expands when its heated and It can expand up to 10% (so I have been told). This is why you are not supposed to fill you tank to the brim, you need to allow for expansion. I filled up recently and the hose felt quite warm as the fuel was being pumped in. I drove 500 mtrs home, parked the car over night, returned the following morning to another garrage close by and topped it up, just to see if there was any difference, I added another 5.5ltrs. I was rather pissed off. At over $1 per ltr you can see why. This definely does not account for 300 kms in lost efficiency but may be of intrest.
This is should probably be on a new thread. Here in melbourne I often fill the tank to the lip. Sometimes (not always) there is lots of bubbles, on some occasions the fuel appears to be different in colours Ie greens, yellows, browns, … this may be dependant on the detergent content or light reflection through the fuel. I am not sure why or if any of these influence the efficiency. Anyone noticed similar?

The colours are probably reflection but the bubbles are interesting It used to be that if you waited a minuite or so after filling so the foam and bubbles subsided you could get more than 5 more liters into the tank but now 2 of the NZ companies are useing a new no suds detergent and first click on the pump is only half liter from full.

I've a 1995 3.1 and I've done 680km's on the current tank with a few millimeters of movement left on the fuel gauge ;D
I think I'm pretty lucky in my choice of Mu as well, I get no visible smoke at all coming out the exhaust even if the accelerator is stamped hard.

My 91 2.8 manual Mu does 650 km mainly city drive with 54-58 lit of diesel refiled.I never saw my reserve light on.Scale falls to the bottom end end I can refil 56 lit so I tought that tank was 65-70 lit but now I know that it is 83 lit which gives me range of more than 800 km from full to empty. I run 31.10,5x15 tires and I change gears betwin 2000 and 2500 revs( only if not racing toyota surf, pajero or other turbo diesel off the trafic lights). Engine is standard (doesn't use any oil) and I'm planing for 2.5 inch exhaust wery soon .

Alan, Have you noticed any difference using the low suds desiel other than a couple mins off the fill time?

Hi all,
HELP Just wondering if there is anything else I should do regarding my fuel economy (94 auto MU on 245/75/16 tyres, 450km around town and 550km highway and that’s NOT being a lead foot). I have replaced the air and fuel filters, and oil. The MU has NO power loss, no smoke, idles perfectly. I have done diesel treatments, injector cleaners and that it on a dyno and tuned but still no improvements. The only other thing I can think of perhaps the injectors are the wrong type, there is a sticker I the engine bay saying that the Mu has had some injector work, I don’t know if that means if they were cleaned or replaced. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated as this problem is starting to hit the pocket. Cheers

How many litres are you filling up with after your 450 to 550Kms?
My 550Kms uses between 70 to 75L of fuel, which makes my average fuel consumption around 13L/100Kms.
I guess for a 1,800Kg vehicle with a turbo that it's reasonable consumption - the company cars (V6 Commondores) at work get over the 14L/100Kms mark when lead foots are driving them.
And like Justin, I am a lead foot in my MU too.
My air filter was replaced about 5,000Kms ago, multiple fuel treatments with no improvement. It was blowing black smoke but an service has cleared that up and there's a little more power on-tap now. Will check fuel consumption next fillup but i don't hold much hope for it. I think I've just gotten used to driving the thing relatively fast and that must be why my fuel consumption got worse over time.
Cheers, G.

well we just went round east cape towing my small boat with the 2.8 bighorn.. best tank we got was 1030kms on 77 litres of Diesel.. and my speedo reads 10% low.. oh how i love the economy of this beast..

the 2.8 is an ecconomical diesel under light running but that must be a record. My best is 800 + 8% speedo error (864) from 72 litres Wellington to Rotorua and back . Normaly I see around 700k from this amount . Still cheaper to run than my work Corola hatch
