I'm wondering if their are any mechanics who's knowledge I can glean from. I have just cook my 3.1td mu. I have had it professionally looked at and found to have lost a chrome sleeve in #2 chamber. The head is also warped. I have been told that to rebuild will be about 7k. Unfortunately this will write the car off. I wanted to get a second opinion of whether this sounds right, so if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Joel

Perhaps a second hand option? Have seen them from $3500-5000, but you never know what you are getting.

Was 7k to do a full rebuild or just do the nesecsary repairs If the other liners are ok then just replace the bad liner plane or replace the head then rings bearings and your home.

$7K doesn't sound outragious. There will be about $2500 in parts for a recon kit alone. Then a new head/planning and any other unexpected problems like a crank grind. The balance of the $7K is in labour. The $7K however may be worst case cost and may come down if none of the extra work is required.
With one liner gone I would find it very hard to believe the others are still in mint condition. Especially as you say it has been cooked. They would all be about the same I expect. It would be a waste of money to just do one. There would be more cost in labour than in parts to do one.
So second hand is cheaper, but party an unknown for the engine condition. A compression test will tell you a lot and I found most sellers offer a compression test even if it's sitting on a pallet.
