It really is a big question 1 do you known what your doing? (mean that in the professional way) 2 gear box and transfer case probably weight 200 kg (so do you have the facilities to lift it out) and 3 while you have the gear box out you should re do all the seals in the gear box and transfer case. No 4 can you pay some one else to do the job. 5 stop leak (no dont go there) my gear box needs to come out to (box leaking oil) but it is some thing I cannot do my self. Quote to take box out and put back in $500. Cheers Bruce

Well.. Now that you put it that way i am not so sure i would be able to do it myself.
So i spose the next step would be does anyone else know anyone that can do(At a reasonable Price) to reseal (and just have a look at the clutch while they are in there i spose).

Ive never liked magic liquid sealents but the gearbox out to do the seal is a huge job.As per above post replace seal = 500 - 600 bottle of stop leak = 12 Is it engine or gearbox oil that is leaking. This can be hard to work out but generaly engine oil is blacker than gearbox. Try a good quality magic sealant first they do work sometimes but expect that the problem will come back in 1 month to 5 years When it does you can do the seal then or try anouther bottle. If in the meantime the clutch needs doing make sure you do both seals at the same time.

Make sure you use only genuine isuzu seals for rear main etc, as I used an aftermarket seal on my truck only to find it leaking within a month - it was fractionally too small. Fortunately the seal company paid full replacement costs.
Re clutch kits you don't necessarily have to use genuine isuzu parts - though they will be of very good quality. Aussie company Daikin makes good clutches also, and if you shop around at parts shops and ask for club discount you can pick up a good clutch kit and save yourself maybe $200. If a clutch kit has ISO 9000 (international quality standard) on it, this will be a start, but enquire over there what people use and find ok over time. Avoid cheap chinese product.
You will need clutch plate, pressure plate, thrust bearing and spiggott bearing in kit, plus rear main seal and front of gearbox seal. Whole lot cost me about $310 trade rate in NZ for a 2.8 model. The 3.1's clutch kit is dearer - unsure of exact cost.
Quotes vary for this job but mine done by club mechanic took 5 hours - he had use of hoist and cradle to support box etc. If doing it at home you'd have to allow a full day.

Gday there. Glad to know that i am not the only one experiencing this problem. I have had one quote to have the thing fixed and this was to the very pricey sum of $1200, plus it took the mechanics 2 days to tell me what the issue was... AFTER I HAD ALREADY TOLD THEM! I am in the process of argueing my case to the mechanic in getting my car back so that i can attempt to do this job myself. All i can say is to shop around, if you have a bit of mechanical knowledge, have a crack... What have you got to lose. If you get someone to do the rear seal, might as well get em to do the clutch at the same time

At most doing the clutch at the same time only doubles the cost. (clutch for 2.8 is under 500) Also not worth fixing till either leak is very bad or oil gets on the clutch and causes it to slip or you are going through lots of oil. Brithish cars always leak worse than this will. 1200 is a good reason to change mechanics. one thing that does happen on isuzus is that there is no proper drainage for the bell housing and oil can build up in there with no visable leak It can be worth drilling a 2mm hole at the lowest part of the bell housing directly below the clutch fork to act as a drain. If you do a lot of water work fit a self tapping screw when wadeing to seal it or water will get on the clutch (ive never bothered with this last step.)

Hey all,
I am getting my dad to have a crack when i go to NZ for the next 2.5 weeks.
good thing about that is free labour and parts(Until i get back anyway)
He is going to look at the clutch for me as well.(He is mechanically minded having also recently done the clutch and all seals in his nissan patrol.
I have got a couple of quotes from mechanics all of them are around the 1200+++ mark. So that detered me a little but dad seems keen enough so i thought arr give him a go.

do both the engine rear and gearbox front seal at the same time. Parts will be over 600 unless you can get good discounts. 5 to 6 hours to do the job so you pay your mechanics fairly well

Hey all i am back from New Zealand. There are alot of Mu's over there i have never seen so many. I will report that we have the clutch apart and i am getting a new one of those $350 approx But the main oil was not the real seal but in fact dripping down from the oil filter region and i am yet to dig a little further into that one. Other then that my holidays were good. If anyone has some tips in how to get the flywheel off that would be appreciated as well.

Leaking oil fiters are a known problem on Isuzus. Only official advise is only use genuine filters. Reality is that most are ok most of the time but Ryco and the clones of ryco are more likly than other brand to come loose. Sakura and Valvolene would be the 2 favorite brands but both have come loose at least once.
