Hey guys, I've been away from Isuzu's for over a year after a brief ownership of a Mitsi Challenger but i'm back again with a 1992 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Irmsher 3.1TD.
I picked up my truck on trade me for $2610 with a fairly high 286,000km in grey but its straight with good paint, 5 speed manual and it seems to run very clean and not using much oil.
With a budget of approx $4k for the whole project i had to be fairly smart with my money!
First off i bought some wheels off trade me as the factory black steelies looked terrible and i wanted the freedom of 15in tyres. Some 15x8.5's turned up on trade me for $300 in a 0 offset. They were fairly oxidised upon pick up so i took them into work and bead blasted them to get them clean and smooth and threw a can of silver metallic aerosol paint on them which worked a treat.
Next up i managed to score a deal with a mate who knew someone that imported tyres so i scored a set of Nankang N889's or Mudstars in a 33x12.5x15 for $200 each plus $80 for fitting and balancing.
I found some duraflares on trade me which were for a holden jackaroo for $220 but needed a fair bit of work to get them mounted. I mocked up the flares onto the guards using tape to hold them in position. Then made up some alloy sheet tabs which i screwed to the lip of the guards as shown.
I then bought a fibreglass kit from Repco and glassed the tabs to the inside of the flares.
Once dry i removed the flares, added some extra firbreglass to strengthen it up nicely and then refitted with the supplied rubber strip.
The first thing i noticed was that the tyres hit the front bumper on full lock so i had to trim it to suit. I fired up my jigsaw and made a cut 2 inches forward on an angle 6 inches up as shown
Next up i wound up the torsion bars (clockwise) to raise the front of the truck 25mm which gave me clearance to get full lock and clear the rear of the wheel well. I'm still scraping slightly when reversing and turning at speed so i'm thinking of either raising it a bit more or cutting away some of the inner guard to gain another inch or so clearance.
It was about then that my starter motor decided to crap itself so back onto trade me i went to search for some bighorns being wrecked. A guy in Manakau was wrecking one and offered me a starter motor for $60 and also had a rear diff for sale. I did a little research and found out the option code for an LSD rear diff was G80 and this had that on the option plate. Managed to get that for $90 ;D and went about installing both the starter and diff (41 tooth crown wheel by the way so the auto's and manuals are identical ratios).
Decided the factory leather steering wheel was past its used by date so replaced it with a 360mm leather wheel bought off trade me for $90 and bolted straight onto the factory Irmscher bosskit with a little modification to the horn wiring.
I then stumbled across some $20 boost gauges from STA parts out by the airport so thought i may as well get one as i'm planning on playing around with turbos and boost pressures etc later down the track. Was easy to plumb in by teeing into the intercooler pressure line as shown.
As you can see the above mods have completely transformed the truck though i have lost a little bit of acceleration due the size of the tyres i'm running.
Running total so far
$4270
