Hi guys,
Been a while since i've been on here. Anyway, i ran into a bit of a problem with the MU (92Mu 4JB1T)
I took it to the local mechanic to get the handbrake fixed and passed for rego. While it was there the mechanic had it parked on a hill, and because the handbrake was stuffed he put it in gear to stop it from rolling away. He told me he was talking to one of his customers when the customer said "is that car rolling?!" Sure enough there was the MU slowly rolling down the hill. He told me this generally means that there is low compression in the cylinders, bugger.
So today i took it back to get the compression checked. This is what the invoice said (i'm pretty sure it's measured in Kpa):
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Check for compression on all cylinders
Piston 1 - 1840 Kpa
2 - 1910
3 - 2130
4 - 1800
Check leakdown
Leakage on valves, rings and turbo
Injection needs doing
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Apparrently this is a bad scenario.
So, i've got a few options.
1. I can spend the cash and get the engine reconditioned. Although i dont know how reliable it would be afterwards. I had a reco engine in one of my previous cars and it just wasn't the same.
2. Because it's not burning oil or blowing black smoke yet, i could trade it in for some other 4wd. I don't particularly like this option cos i've had so much time, effort and money invested in the beast, it'd de a shame to see all that go to waste.
3. My mechanic made a few calls and said he can get a brand new 4JB1 engine with 0kms for $4500. This is a possabillity.
4. My mechanic offered to sell me his 93' Toyota Hilux for $12000-$15000. This Hilux has a VS Commodore HSV 308 V8 Supercharged engine conversion and runs on LPG but also has a 235LT fuel tank, and looks a bit like a monster truck. I'll be seeing it in 2 weeks time. Although i think this is just out of my price range.
5. I could also do an engine conversion on the MU, replacing the diesel with a 3.8L V6 Commodore engine. Depending on price this is the option i am most likely to go with. I have seen posts on here where people have said they are going to do it, and people who have heard of people doing it, but i haven't seen a MU with it done yet. The only thing that may be an issue with this is, as the mechanic said is the sump position on the Commodore engines. Commodore's have a front mounted sump and to fit it into the MU it would have to be a rear mounted sump to get it past the front diff. Is this true? Does anyone have any other ideas? Can the almighty MU launch over sand dunes once again?!
Feel free to comment.
Cheers
Daniel
