I`m thinking about removing the rear fold-down seats from my Bighorn as they have never been used.
Apart from the cost of getting it certified are there any other disadvantages that people are aware of ?
And apart from the extra space are there any other advantages.
From an off-road point of view is this a good idea?

I dont think there are any issues with removing seat from a vehicle, its only when you add seats that WOF is concerned. You are reducing the seating capacity and you have to have everyone seated and seatbelted to not get booked...if there are no seat then you just cant have anyone else in the rear!!
Go for it, I remove my rear seats in my MU all the time, gives heaps of room but the ONLY disadvantage is the seats folded forward provide a barrier (like cargo barrier) from the gear in the back. I fit a low homemade drawer system with the fridge bolted down to the top of it, for when Im touring!
Goodluck!

If you never use them the only disadvantages are less rattles and no protection for the back of the front seats. A cargo barrier will fix both of these and act like a poor mans role cage. No need for certification but if you leave the seat belts in WOF man will still inspect them and if you take them out he should make you weld over the holes if he notices and bothers. (this is so you cant refit the seat and substandard belts once hes not looking Accuse him of being picky if he goes down this line)
