I'd be interested to know what everybody's opinions are on allowing a TURBO to wind down prior to shutting the engine off.
I think, by the time the engine is down to an idle the turbine has slowed enough for the engine to be shut off without causing trouble. What do you guys think?

This is always a great topic.. general thinking is that a moderate run on the motorway 100kmph, let the motor idle for 30 - 60 seconds

The manual states "under 100 kph no wind down,100kph 1 min, over 100kph or hill work 3 min for wind down" You do need to idle for a few seconds to let the turbo revs drop but the big killer for turbos is the traped heat that can in extreme cases boil the oil and cause all sorts of mayham. The turbo used on our wagons is water cooled so doesnt need as much of a wind down as older turbos but keep in mind the above if towing etc

Simon, it's not about letting the turbine slow down, it's about allowing the turbo to cool down while there is still oil (or water if water cooled) circulating.
The point about turbo timers or manually allowing the engine to idle for a time after a drive is that you don't want the oil to sit inside an almost red hot turbo. This causes the oil to breakdown into sludge and cakes up the turbo oil passages. Next drive there might not be enough oil flow through the turbo to keep it happy.
Also, idle time allows the turbo to cool while still rotating, reducing the chance or scope of sudden temperature changes causing other issues (metal contracts & expands etc).
IMO it's always safer to have an idle period. For me that means the minute it takes to open the gate & put the MU away, or to idle through the car park to my parking spot.
Cheers! Graham.
