Just wondering if anyone could give rough figures on economy for '94 3.1 TD MU. I swear mines gettimg worse (could be a reaction to the price of diesel). Just done a test - 22.8 mls/gal (9.2km/litre) - mostly open road ,bit in built-up area, only a few K's in 4wd.

the 3.1 does use more gas than the 2.8 but yours dont sound right. Replace the air cleaner as a first step A bad air cleaner makes a huge differance

My swb bighorn 2.8 - basically same mechanicals as mu averages 52km per gallon - rock steady on this over six months of testing. On recent club trip, we filled all vehicles then did about 5ookm into southern mountains. Result: Isuzu most economical, followed by Terrano and well down the track, Toyotas - the 6 was a shocker. Worst was Safari turbo which did about 22km per gallon. Isuzu's 2.8 is a very good motor and still produced new in new Isuzu twincab 4wd utes in some parts of the world. Mike.

I had a 2.8 turbo-diesel 4JB1-T that gives me 28mpg (British gallon). My present 3.1TDi 4JG2-TC gives only 22 to 24 mpg or 8 to 9 km/liter. I can never can get better mpg that others are reporting. 50:50 Town and Highway.

Been meaning to ask this question myself. At present Iam getting 10 lts/klm was getting 8.9 lts/klm before using Hiflow additive, now have snorkle on so will see if it improves anymore. I believe that as the temperature drops (winter) I get better economy. I actually get better economy driving around town than on the hiway. The big test will be towing the new camper trailer on hols in a couple of weeks. When towing just the trailer with the camping gear I averaged about 7.5 lts/klm will now be about 300kgs heavier so it will be interesting to see what its like then, especially at an average of $1 a litre. When I first brought the MU I was getting over 11lts/klm and I was all ways driving her harder than I do now, I think that they don't like the fuel we use out here, anyway gabbled on enough on this. Cheers Bruce

My 1994 3.1 TD MU gives me about 700km/tank or an average of 9.4km/L. This is mostly open road driving but i find that if i'm cruising around town (or stuck in traffic jams) then the turbo isn't used as much and i can get about an extra 30-40km per tank. My efficeincy doesn't change unless i go offroad and that usually whacks it way off!!

With my 2.8 Td Mu I get between 800-850 km with full tank in open road (at 90-100km/h), and 600 km in off road (4H-4L). My better result is 14,7 km per liter at 90 km/h (without air conditioner and with 30 PSI in tires); all this at open road.
The 2.8 Mu is very economical...and very powerfull too...hehe !!!

My '95 3.1 Auto MU did 9.5L/100Kms when I first got it but now, 2 years later, its only good for 12.5L/100Kms under the same driving conditions.
Winter is better - the air is more dense, allowing the engine to produce more power.
Cheers, G.

Okay let me know what you think of these figures with airconditioning on, whuy not might as well enjoy what's offering in life I decided to push the machine the other day coming over the mountain passes, using high 4 just to see what the handling was like on shall we say wet roads in temperatures of 7° and I only slipped down to 23 miles to the gallon. Now this includes using every electrical swict I can, from seat warmers to keeping the mirrors clear. All this in a '97 3.1 EFi Bighorn Lotus SE Auto. By the way Jack (the 4x4) really handle the roads well, no oversteer, sliding or anything, just stuck to the road like glue, running AT Bridgestones, @ 40psi Me other figures are $30.00 of Diesel for 410 kilometeres, that was being really conservative with driving and only 2wd open highway for 360 k's 50 k's city driving

I have a 94 3.1 TD Mu (under 90,000kms) and it too seems to drinking a lot. I am not %100 sure of my tank capacity. At the moment I am getting 400-420kms per tank(not sure the size of it) city driving, Brisbane. I should really check/replace the air filter and see if that makes a difference. My Mu runs and sounds perfect but something has to be wrong if these figures are correct?

My MU gives 500kms a tank, (which is 84 ltrs BTW), around town, and that's draining it low, so the figures you quote if your a lead foot like me ain't that out of whack. J

Thanks for the info Justin, considering my previous car one month ago was a V8, I guess that I might have unknowingly become heavy footed in the MU,........Oops ;D

There in lies the common ground, my ride before my first MU was a worked 253 V8 Hz Ute. Mind you that was 4 years ago and the foot's still heavy :)J

What an Excellent topic. It certainly has received alot of attention. Great to see. So has anyone a theory on why so many of us were getting much better mileage out of our trucks when we first got them. Fuel type ?, or maybe climate ?, Driving Conditions and roads ?, a combination of things ? If so, what can we do/change/ad to get it back to where we know it can be. Justin, you're still a bloody leadfoot ... rofl ;D although mine aint that grand compared to some here. 9.3ish Km/L.

Yeh I know, but I was out driving around the local area the other day and it still amazes me that my 3.1 TD auto with an LSD can spin the rear 265 ST's when pulling away in the dry on tarmac. You gotta luv it :)J

Yeah My 3.1 can break ttraction in the dry pretty easily on take off, but being a manual, it stops that quick when I have to change up!!
The tanks on MUs are 84 l but the gauge on mine says empty at about 60l gone. So if I drove to my gauge I would say I get about 500l per tank but I still have 1-200km depending on the driving style at the time.
I have driven it to empty a few times across the Nulabor and the gauge stops at empty and still drove for ~200km. PS the low fuel light works and gives about 45km at 100km/h after fully coming on!
