The MUs in Australia are only imported from Japan anyway, so they are relatively all the same.
There's 3 diesel engines in MUs that I know of - commonly, there is a 2.8 (4JB1?) and a 3.1 (4JG2?) both turbo diesel, but I think in 96 there was a 3.0 TDi (4xe2 or something) you can find more info about each engine by searching the forums - the 3.0TDi on paper seems to have a lot of power but there are reliability issues if it is not maintained correctly.
Older MUs also had a 2.6L petrol motor.
I'm not sure where you are, but if you are in Australia, be aware that MUs can't be imported due to the SEVS laws. I'm not sure if this applies to personal imports if you live overseas for more than 6 months though.
Cheers, Graham.

Cool. i live in Japan so importing problem.
from what i have seen they are rated about 120HP
is this true or is that at the wheels?
seems pretty low for such a large motor and turbo.

It's about 91kW for the 3.1 from memory.
It's not much power, but the torque, something like 270Nm, is almost as much as a reasonably powered 5L V8.
Being a 1.8 Ton diesel (low revs) it does get going reasonably well. My stock MU runs out of puff around 110kph. It still accelerates, just not as well. I'm still wanting to upgrade the exhaust which should help overall power & acceleration.
If you do a search, there should be a thread with lots of stats on here somewhere.
Cheers, G.
