I'm in the market for some new freewheeling hubs as I've had enough of the crappy superwinch hubs I now have. They are impossible to keep watertight and I'm on my nineth wheel bearing in two years, with the last one being a complete failure at 100km/h and ripped the lock tab to bit's. Thats beyond my tolerance level.
So where in NZ or Christchurch can I get some freeweehling hubs. All the wreckers are out of stock and all I've found are $240/pair second hand ones from truckbits (auck) and brand new superwinch hubs (hisssss, growl). The second hand ones may be a bit leaky so best to avoid I think.
Anyone offer any suggestions? I'm thinking Aisin.

Dont know if you can get the new ones but I know that pick a part in Welly had a 88ish bighorn with manual asin hubs 3 weeks ago The only catch is they expect you to dismantal yourself I could try and get up there and have a look this weekend How many splines do yours have as I belive there is 2 types Is your definatly leaking in the hub Mine leaks somwere else which is why I was asking about the seal and axle bearing the other week On mine there is no sign of leakage when the hub is sprayed by a high presure hose for 10 min but 5 min in water more than axle deep = eggcup of water inside the hub I know about the wheel bearing issue Mine went the day after driving from Wellington to Dunedin (22 december) and left me without a car for 6 days If it had gone 2 days earlier I would of been on the road behind the Kaikoras.

Hi James- I have Aisin freewheeling hubs on my 88swb. Have done huge number of rivers in last 18 months - and been stuck in a few - and have had no problems at all with leakage. Packed them with MBL grease which alot of clubbies use for hubs and bearings, and they are great. Recommended. Drained the truck a few times but never the hubs. Will be in touch shortly re trip for Cantabs up to Glenthorne station by lake Coleridge - regards Mike A.

Yeah, I'm not sure if new Aisin is aviliable new. From searching on the web I've establised Aisin is a part manufacturer for Japenese auto companys and I think they are only OEM and not aftermarket. I do think Aisin is the way to go as I've hear nothing bad about them. I just wondering about the integrety of the second hand hubs seals. Geeves - the problem with the Superwinch hubs is they have no thrust releif or bearing. So when you set up the end play for the CV shaft, the free wheeling wheel/hub wears against the stationary CV shaft. This wear occurs quickly (~500Km) as improper materials are used i.e. thrust bears on the cast housing. This in turn causes the seal behind the hub to become sloppy and leak. They also leak out the dial, with grease spraying onto the wheel rims. I'm also considering maching the hubs to include thrust relief, maybe a bearing, or even to pressurise them with air as I have onboard air already.
I have tried everything with these hubs, a sloppy fit to take off the thrust, new seals, every grease you could think of. But the long and short of it is I have gone though 9 bearings in two years with Superwinch hubs and never replaced any with the factory fit autohubs.
