looking to swap my 3.1 engine in an isuzu trooper to a 2.8 engine.
seems a straight swap.
where is the rpm sensor on the engine to run the rev counter?
everything else seems a straight swap, hopefully ill save a few bucks on fuel with the DI 2.8
any more info or tips on this swap would be much appreciated

We had a member in Botswana who did this conversion in a Frontera and had all sorts of problems with the auto. If yours is a manual it should be easy. I belive the sensor is in the fuel pump so if yours is a non electronic 3.1 it should be the same. the 2.8 is the more ecconomical engine but only by a couple od mpg The ecconomy difference will never pay for the swap on its own

well i have the engine from my old frontera sitting here, so essentially its free.
its a manual non electronic pump, just want a bit more economy and i find my old 2.8 is more powerful than this 3.1.

Your 3.1 should pull the crap out of the 2.8 no problem at all...I had both and swapped the 2.8 to a 3.1 and the torque was amazing. Im back in a 2.8 and I m glad for the economy but not the lack of power.
If your problem is power then sort the 3.1 out...if your problem is economy then yes the 2.8 will be nice.
Work oout what you want then the people here can help but you have two opposite problems and alot of work for little gain.
Matt.

Bought my trooper with a 2.8, put back in a 3.1. Consumption climbed from 10l/100km to 12l/100km

I know the heads are a weak point but never heard of oil pump issuse before unless the engines had been poorly maintained by earlier owners. This can be a problem with any second hand diesel engine as none of them tolerate poor maintenance and you have no way of knowing except by stripping the engine when you get it. There is a company in the Uk that specialises in replaceing the 4jx1 engines from 98 and later troopers with 2.8 engines. I belive they are useing either brand new engines or full recon ones. If you look up ther UK trooper owners club you should be able to find there ad
