Blow off valves on diesels are useless.
In turbo petrol engines, they are activated in a situation where the engine is boosting under acceleration, then the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator. This closes the throttle butterfly in the air intake (this is the difference petrol vs. diesel; diesel throttle controls fuel flow, not air). This closing of the throttle creates pressure in the pipes because the turbo is still spinning and trying to make boost.
A blow off valve releases this pressure build up.
Cheers. Andy.
