My new truck's handbrake refuses to stay adjusted to proper tension - comes loose after a few days with handbrake lever coming out to the max and not operating correctly.
Is this a new piston or rear caliper kit required, or some other adjustment - 88 bighorn
Thanks, mike

any of the typical handbrake issues can cause this. In order of ease remove the handbrake cables and make sure they are free running in the tubes. Lube thougherly Refit and adjust. The correct setting is 0.5mm off the end stop. Remove calipers and lube the slides. One is the bolt the other is the outside of the sleeve. 74% chance problem now fixed Run the adjuster back and forwards a few times You should feel a slight ratchet but its not very strong. If this has siezed or is not ratcheting send the callipers and credit cards to your local brake specialist. This ratchet frequently siezes and will break if you force it or try and force the pistons back when changeing pads. Your swb was bound to of had the same probs at some stage or did it have rear drums.
Only long term fix Ive come acrtoss would be to fit the later brakes from a ubs69 or ucs69. Fit them as a complete set and you get bigger discs front and back and a drum in disc handbrake. The rear brake assembly bolts straight to the diff but all this will need certification. The improvement will be worth it
