Auto trans service

Ive just drop my auto trans sump and replaced the filter a mate was there watching me refill it and questioned the way i was doing it! Ive always done it by having the hand brake on and it in drive with the motor running and checking the dip stick. I know the old Fords and Holden's Ive had in the passed with autos are meant to be done that way
Still don't have a manual so can someone advise me

bugger your right geeves stuff knows why i thought you had to have it in drive i read your reply and then went and checked an old ford manual O well i haven't had any problems doing it that way but thanks geeves il go recheck my Fluid level tomorrow!
