Could be any number of things.. when was the last time the oil was changed? when was it last serviced ? when was the air filter last checked/changed? I have the 2.8 TD too in my MU .. and it idles a bit rough in the morning for about 5 mins then goes fine for the rest of the day .. As for gutless on hills.. it could be anything .. I'll leave it to Greeves/Alan to answer this as he's the guru

I wouldnt go as far as guru but 11 years playing with the bighorn gives lots of experiance. Is the motor in a 98 rodeo fully mechanical like the eary 4jb1t or does it have electronic control? Where in NZ are you? Depending on where you are there are a couple of easy things. If pure mechanical the cold start system doesnt switch on till 5C Just above this temp they can be hard to start with similar symptoms but it should settle within a minute or 2 not 5. Below 5C it should be fine again. On the thermostat housing try removing the wire on the drivers side sensor. With this removed the engine will think its cold and will then glow the plugs 30sec and start fine. It will also knock something shocking if you put any load on the engine so dont drive to far like this. other possible suspects are low compression, bad air or fuel filter blocked exhaust for the starting and power prob and binding brakes for power. And lucky last the fuel itself There are 2 blends of diesel in NZ Summer diesel available all year in the warm areas and winter blend available in cold places. Quite a few people have filled up there wagon in Auckland or Wellington Driven to the skifield and parked only to find solid diesel when its time to go home. Even winter diesel will freeze at about -10 If you must park in lower temps it might pay to add about 10%kero. In Antarctica the diesels run on jetA1 fuel which is just about pure kero Whats fuel and oil consumption like?
