I've got a 96 Isuzu Bighorn and whenever I try to engage 4x4 mode I get a little red light flashing after driving for about 2-3 minutes max that says check.
Any idea what could be wrong? Am I doing anything wrong in engaging it? I'm fairly new to owning 4X4 so please be gentle (i.e. simple answers)!
It happens in high and low ratio 4x4 mode.
Thanks

Is the 96 old fashioned part time 4wd or the later touque on demand? if 4wd is activated by a lever on the floor and your front wheels have either a large protusion with auto written on it or a knob you can turn its part time. If its a switch then its either shift on the fly or torque on demand. In general dont used 4wd on hard surfaces but beyond that we need more info before we can help. What happens if you select 4wd but remain parked in neutral with the engine running for 5 min. does the light have any symbal against it

It's the torque on demand model. I've only ever tried it off road when I thin I may need it. I'll try it in neutral and get back to you in 5 minutes.....

Just tried it and no red light in idle for 5 minutes. It has a lever to select either 2wd, TOD, or 4wd

I think it does it in TOD as well.
Would I be right in guessing it's likely to be something to do with the vacuum servo?

After a little further investigation...
Jack front of car up and in 2wd the front prop spins freely by hand. Stick it in 4wd (low) and it gives about 1/4 to 1/2 a turn before it clunks and locks in so it will no longer turn. Back in 2wd and it spins freely again.
I'm a little stuck for working space at my flat and would really like to get this sorted before heading of on a ski trip so if anyone in Wellington can help I'm sure I could supply some beer vouchers in exchange....
