Hey,
I've been thinking that along with a dual battery set-up, lights, and plans for 3 electric fans, it might be a good idea to do something with the alternator.
I've been in contact with pissy about his 120 Amp alternator from the Isuzu N-Series (ALT160502). He's not sure if it normally has a vaccum pump on the back of it, and doesn't think it will fit the 2.8 because the bolt pattern is different.
Anyone have more info on it? Could it be modified to fit?
I am planning to remove my air-con pump, but was planning to use the space for a new air-intake route...

Hi funny you should ask I've just dropped the mutroll down to my auto elecs shop in arndell park to get my altanator takin out, After drowning it in ice cold river water 3 or 4 times at mt walker last weekend (as i'm to lazy & pressed for time b4 the ramp day on sat). Once out he will pull down & quote & also quote on a new 80 or the 120 amp alt part numbers supplied from the isuzu parts homepage & i'll make a executive decision depending on the cost differances but will let you guys know how it goes. P.s anything can be modified to fit... With wild turkey anythings possible hehehe ;D cheers muvi

I would hate to spend $100's and then drown it... Any ideas on mods to keep the mud & water out?
Maybe a mini bash/mud deflector plate underneath it?

There is only one way to keep the mud and water out but you might not want to take those steps. (if you never go near mud and water it cant get in). Mounting the alternator as high as possible helps. Someone was playing with a water jet above the brushes Dont know results. Only other answer is regular remove and clean. Not a nice job but at the price of alternators

When I was at fraser Island so time ago, I was hitting large paddles of fresh water, (after a big rain on some inland tracks to wash the underbody),......anyhow when I hit the paddles my dash battery monitor showed a drop in voltage for a few seconds? Not sure as to why this was happening but I put it down to belt slipping due splashes of water,..........?
Any thoughts?
I have the 120 amp alt, just thought that might be relavent to this thread.

That will be water on the brushes. Fresh water for short periods does no harm. Salt water and muddy water though are very bad. As a side thought I can put you onto someone selling 400 amp alternators but they dont have the vacuum pump and they are close to $1000. Means you can winch all day as long as your engine runs

400 amp!? Jeez... I thought 250 was the latest and greatest... Wouldn't many wires need upsizing with that amount of current?
I think the best option for me is to leave the current alternator where it is, but disconnect everything and just use it for the vaccum pump, and see if it's possible to mount a high-amp alternator in the air-con place, but a bit lower down to allow more space for the turbo air intake...
Is it easy to change from the single belt pulley to a double on alternators? Would like to keep the standard belt configuration if I go this way.

Have a look round local wreckers (picapart is cheap) for an alternator with the same wireing setup and the right pulley. Aparantly its easy to swap the pulleys but Ive never tryed.

Any cars or trucks to look out for that would have substantial amps?
Not sure whether it's worth to cough up for a high amp new one, (which should be protected up high...)

From memory you need one with 3 wires in the control plug +the main power wire. If you find a Hitachi it should line up. The amperage is fairly obvious in the model number. With Bosch they have the current written on them and have the advantage of accessible brushes

400 amp!? Jeez... I thought 250 was the latest and greatest... I had a 600 amp alternator in a Holden Gemini when I was younger ... to got with the 8000 watt stereo system that I put in it ;D .. ahh .. those where the days ... mind you.. I also lost 15% of my hearing too .. lol

MMM i can relate to that as i still listen to music that hovers around the 100+db constantly 5 days a week as if you dont already know i drive the fusion truck for a living ;D & it's the best job me thinks!! Not many jobs i know that you can listen to your tunes all day, eat when you want & perv all day & get paid for it hehehe My genera of music is vast comprising of hard dance, hard style, hard trance, industrial, hardcore, & my fav hardcore gabba with small amounts of pop & garnished with RNB. I kid you not, Just ask anyone who knows me!. Have to make use of the 6000+ system which on the new meter hits 146.6 db & use to run in super street 1-2 back in the day. On a sour note though i picked up the mutroll from my sparky yesterday before the BBM ramp day started sporting some pretty flash bling hidden under the A/C compressor. Yes the N-SERIES (ALT160502) fits onto the 2.8 bracketry with a 5mm spacer on the rear lowest mount (too easy). gave it a whirl with all my spotties going , high beam etc & very impressive needle barely drops even with bllnkers on where as it use to move eraticly up & down The sour note was the price tag that went with it though as he couldn't source one in sydney would you believe it was air frieghted from Adelaide & took 2hrs to remove my shagged one & remove & re-gas the A/C pump & retrofit to the new flavour as i still had the old stuff So by the end of it all the bill came to $1068 For that price tag i almost scrapped the 2.8 donk for a v6 & turbo 700 box only reason i didn't is coz i'm commited to wheelin next sunday at menai then yawal the following week & our stint last week in july. but i can tell you that there WONT be a next time!! But i'm still on a high now anyway after yesterdays ramp results thats why i didn't post this reply last night appologies for the life story i was getting carried away LOQ cheers muvit

yea go for a alternator off a nisssan terrano as these dnt have vacum pumps and are still hi tachi althought the wires arent hard to change if you get stuck give me a txt an should be able to give u a hand as im a auto sparky im da guy you came up da beach with a while back im guessen u got ur clutch fixed then??? lol

How do the Terranos do brake vacuum? Ive got to swap my alternator again soon. Alt light comes on when going through puddles which is ok but takes 20 to 40 minuites to go off again which is not so ok. Gave my old one a going over and found the only problem was stuck brushes and 1kg of mud. Should of replaced the brushes as they are 9mm different in length but it will fill with mud and need changing again by the time they wear out

If the Terrano is a ZD30 one (3l t/d), it has a separate vacuum pump below the timing cover ;-)
