I am going to get some rock sliders fabricated for my MU. If anyone else would like a set we could get them done at the same time and the costs would come down a bit. I am aiming for under $300 for the set. There will have to be two different mounting set ups for the 3.1 and 2.8 models. I am going to try and keep the price below $300 for the set. Questions: Would people prefer powder coated or painted? Powercoating is tougher but paint is easy to touch up and they will be copping a flogging. What extention to you want from the sill out? I am thinking just enough to get a foot hold on so they will double as thin side steps. At this stage the initial plans they are to be made from box section steel cut and welded in aproximately \_____/ shape from the side of the vehicle. Like www.darlington-offroad.com/Images/rodeo%20rock%20skidderz%20catalog_smaller.jpg Like www.houlster.com/amigo/armor/index.htmI have an experienced welder lined up to manufacture them. Input would be great. Jimmu

Definently keen pending the price. I think $300/set is reasonable. I think they should come out at least roughly around half a foot...Just enough to get your toes and Ball of your foot on them for some shorter people to get in the car if you know what im trying to say.
Great thinking Jimmy, I rekon pending what everyone elses current set ups are they would all be keen.
Cheers,
Kurt.

I will be interested as I wish to get rid/sell my side side steps. I would prefer it to come out a tiny more so that I can use them to load the roof racks. For $300 or under I will be in (Jimmy, I will need your help to take off the side steps and bolt the slides on). Let me know how it goes.

I'd be up for them mate, but they'd have to be for a 3.1 or the same as Pissy's and I would need to look at the cost of freight down to Sydney. I guess the alternative is find someone down here when I get a minute to scratch myself! J

Ok. Long time for an update but I am getting my set sorted at the moment. $350 for a set 4mm tube done by a pro. He has made dozens for GQs etc. They are mounted by 16mm U bolts to the chassis and you can jack the car off them. He lives just down the road from me too which is handy. Jimmy

Thats a nice design. Its good to have them removeable whereas most people tend to weld them on which can cause WOF issues

Witchdoctor asked me to put this up These are the type of sliders I would get built or more like what I will build. The only change would be attached to chassi using large U bolts, box section is stronger than round & that comes direct from the Rock Crawling guys. Will have to add these to my to build list (Dave)

Seeing your pics kinda makes me feel like mine are gonna be overkill. I am using 50x70x3mm tube for the slider itself, to sit horozontial beside the sill, its been acid bathed and welded the ends closed. 100x100x4mm(maybe 5) angle as the mounting to chassis, one side cut down to lessen the L, with 40x40 angle to brace it so there is NO sideways movement....
Not sure on what colour to powdercoat them yet.. Mu is blue... may just stick with blue...
Makin them myself, since i got the gear and material free at work.

It is a bit of over kill demonic, but at least they will be strong. I made a set that bolted to the existing holes and under the chassis to try and eliminate movement, turns out it was the chassis flexing!!! 50 x25x2.5 rhs is a nice size, have made a few of these for mu's and safari's, 2 bits welded side by side, then another bit spaced out 25mm, mounted off 100x50 x3 rhs with 5mm mounting plates. The big u bolts or similar around the chassis is the easiest way to go, it's againt the law to drill into a chassis and you have to get a cert if you weld to the chassis, unless you have a friendly wof man.

Yeah.. I started out thinking Bigger is better, and as i worked my way through them i kinda figured that these will reduce my clearence alot.. So monday ill have another look and see if we got anything smaller laying round the workshop...
Ill keep the mounts i made cos using the 5mm angle i know its not gonna move, and with one side of it cut down i can weld a brace to the side and then the mounts out to the sliders on the flat edge.
One thing i found when i took the steps off was that the brackets had folded over when the steps had hit something, making it almost impossable to get a socket or spanner to undo the bolts. hence the angle.

Na.. I started makin a new set, using 30x30x4 box section. There 100mm to shorter than i wanted, but they will do nice. So now its just the connection between chassis mount and slider ..and maybe a set of side steps. should they stick out a lil bit further then the vehicle? for semi-wall protection? like maybe 25-40mm? or flush with the edge of sill?
