yeh im about the same as elysian but i havent noticed much black smoke on a up shift from higher rpm. holden does your engine struggle to get to the higher revs?

Mine lives at those revs as well. Good power all the way up to there as well but 2.5 inch exhaust, snorkle and high flow filter help. It wouldnt go past about 3800 before those mods. Now the turbo boost drops after 4000 but its still 12 at 4300 and the rev limiter.

about 4500 or so, but thats floggin her in low range, never knew a diesel had a rev limiter??? new one on me. they just run out of power to pull the revs up any higher. as geeves explains above, you need a few mods to rev any higher, but revving diesels kills them. they'd rather have the torque used

Since taking my cold start system off the exhauste mine gets a lot more pull out of second gear, it used to die at 3400ish but now it goes freely up to 4K, its opened up a fair bit across the rev range to.

NisDeo there isnt a revlimiter on the VE pump the Isuzus use. They have a flyweight setup inside the pump and if this spins too fast it will push on the throttle lever inside and limit the amount of fuel delivery. So when you say it runs out of power...you are right! The fuel gets restricted as the pump spins at its rated RPM.
You can overspeed a diesel vehicle but requires a heavy load and a huge downhill descent and the weight of the load can push the vehicle faster than the pump would normally allow but this damages the engine.
Most modern HeavyVehicles use the computer (ECM) to log when a vehicle has been oversped and this voids the warranty immediately.
All the best
Matt.
