Hi all,
I think I have a glow plug problem. My Mu is rough starting in the cold sometimes... and lots of smoke blue, but smells like fuel. I have checked the glow plugs themselves, all of which are ok, and they are getting power when it glows. However it is very quick, maybe 1/2 second when warm (always has been) and certainly no more than a second when cold, and almost never glows more than that even when really cold... 5 Deg C or colder. Ocassionaly it glows for 5 seconds ish when really cold... but seems random.... sometimes on rough start the second attempt prompts a long glow... but is still rough. I don't suspect the temp sensor as it is not too old....
So what is typical glow times for everyone else?..... for say 10 deg C and colder?
Maybe the glow plug controller is duff?

the timer on the 4jb1 is strictly a temp switch. The sensor is in the thermostat houseing and is the one on the drivers side. When the water is below 5 this sets a 5 second glow and advances the injector timing. You can test the rest of the system by disconecting this wire. You will get a 5 second glow and less smoke but any load on the engine and it will knock something silly. Someone here replaced this sencoer recently and it made an improvment Cant remember who

James how have you tested theh plugs?
You sound like you have checked for power at the plugs when you start and if youo have the 2.8 then the initial glow is small, a few seconds and then there is a period of after glow.
Basically the 2.8 being direct injection doesnt require a glow really at all....so I will guess your hard starting may be due to some other reason.
Since you have checked the obvious then I would start considering things like air...or injectors maybe getting a bit long in the tooth.
Try priming the fuel pump before you start and if it starts and runs fine then you have a drainback or airbleed problem.
If all that fails I would suggest its injectors...have you had them done?
Matt.

I have the same symptoms.
Changed the glow plugs to brand new ones and disconnected the temp sensor wire to force them to run longer before starting, but it didn't change much.
After reading MattMU's post I went out this morning and primed the fuel pump as well as forcing the plugs to glow longer. Started much better! Little bit of blue, but no clouds of white/gray smoke that usually trail behind me for a while after...
Have PM'd MattMu asking how one would go about fixing this, but might be useful to post here too.
Cheers Andy.

I still haven't got of my preblem, and the glow has got worse..... now way less than a second.. say 200mS... I wonder what effect the other sensor(s) have? The other one on the thermostat housing and the air senors in front of the radiator. I suppose I should read the circuit diagram... Pulling the first sensor wire does give a long glow and engine pinking... so at least that senor and wire seem to be ok
But I have a wreck... with spares so wonder if the timer is duff.... where is the timer located in a 91 MU and an 84 Bighorn? (the donar)
But reading Andys post above maybe I should look at fuel... but it shouldn't produce lots of smoke right?
... and then reading Matts post.... leaning towards injectors? They have over 100,000 km on them that I know about... might be due

My tame diesel mechanic told me the injectors in the 4jb1 should be good for 200000. On the 89 bighorn the glow timer is next to the flasher relay under the dash drivers side. The mu is probably the same. The 84 bighorn though is the c223 and probably different
