Hey all,
Recently over the last few months, my MU has been getting harder and harder to start in the mornings. To set the scene, I have a driveway that has a slight incline and park with the nose in the air. After shutting off for the night and getting into it the next morning, it would cough and splutter, blow puffs of smoke and wouldn't go over 1500rpm even with the foot firmly planted on the pedal. This was rectified each day by popping the bonnet and pumping the heck out of the primer until hearing the note of the engine changing, then jumping into the beast and going off to work/play for the day. After a couple of weeks of this, I decided to park in reverse with the nose pointing down. Hmmmm, not problems at all at startup........
So down to my local pump shop for a bit of advice who gave me a one way valve to try out as we thought I might have been having a heap of fuel draining back into the tank. No change damn.
Pump off, strip and rebuild. Apparently the pumps on the 4Jb1 engines have a habit of flogging the front bushes and start to suck air which results in a flooded pump. The throttle housing was also worn and reclaimed with a new bush. The pump was timed to the vehicle and tappets were reset also.
Result........ Much more grunt and an engine that starts really well in the morning. I am a happy camper, it hasn't been this good since I had it!!!!
That is all.

It has done 212,00 Km's. The main inspiration to getting the pump done was A: I don't want to be stuck somewhere if it were to really go kaput eg middle of nowhere camping and B: the pump shop that I went to I get a great deal due to the business I work for using them. It cost under $900, well spent in my opinion.
