They go like pigs when the turbo fails so yours might be ok although any noise issue should be hunted down urgently. Only real way to check if the turbo is working is fit a boost guage but easy first test is to remove the intake to the turbo with the engine off and gentaly push and pull the impellor There should be some but not much front back movement (mine has 0.5mm but has 200000km) Then turn the impellor by hand it should turn smoothly. Then start engine Impellor should spin at idle even though it wont be makeing any boost. Stop and reassemble. Things that affect boost apart from the turbo are air cleaner, exhaust and cold start thing causeing blockages

On my 1991, the turbo spools up and starts providing boost at between about 1900RPM up until around 2900RPM. You can notice if you are getting any decent boost by leaving in 3rd gear from around 1500RPM and accelerating, it will be a little bit of a slug until it hits 2grand and you will then notice an increase in acceleration.

peak power is between 2500 and 3500 give or take a bit but you should feel the turbo start to kick before this although if yours is auto it may mask this somewhat. Its very hard to diagnose these things by forum as we cant see your wagon
