If it is indeed running cold some damage can occur but this is a slow process. Bigger worry is the loss of power and ecconomy. Most likely cause is a bung or missing thermostat Cant think of any other cause. First test drive 15 to 20 km and put your hand on the top of the radiator If its very uncomfortable to hold it there its the gauge and the engine is ok If its warm but not hot let it cool right down and remove the thermostat cover (other end of top radiator hose) take out the thermostat and examine. It should be closed. Place it in a pot of cold water on the stove and heat It should open slightly about the same time as bubbles start to apear on the pot bottom and be open fully just before the water boils. Wash the pot before giveing back to the wife and not a good idea to use a non stick pot as scratches in the non stick dont go down well. Replace and reassemble as req
