Just doing some work on my 4JB1T this weekend and will reset tappets. Can anyone tell me exactly what tappet clearance should be - sometimes they are set too tight ex japan.
thanks, mike.

0.4mm or 16thou for both. This info should be on the plate on the firewall. Sounds a lot more fun than siphoning muddy water out of my headlights last Sunday. (after 200 meters through a bonnet high puddle on Saturday)

when you do the valve set make sure you set it on tdc1 then check the tension of the rocker shaft bolts to 40ftlb look at the valves as 1 thru 8 looking from the front of engine. then adjust valves as looking from front 1,2,3,6. then wind over engine 360deg one turn of crank the adjust valves 4,5,7,8. you want a light drag on the feeler gauge not to heavy that it cannot be pulled out or to loose that it goes in easy. only done mine and my bro inlaws on the weekend. and i sugest replace the rocker cover gasket as they tend to stick to the head surface as mine did and it tore apart. they only cost bout $20-30 dollars.

Ive always taken the each valve to its fully open point then turned the crank one full turn so the cam must be fully closed. This alows for high lift or duration cams. Easy enough on a petrol as you can remove the spark plugs so no compression but takes longer Not so easy to reduce the compression on the diesel. My tappets are still as they came from japan 12 years ago
