Hi all,
I was driving a 4x4 club members truck with a auto trans and I thought that it was a hell of alot easyer them a manual. And last sunday I was doing beach run in my MU with a manual trans and putting the foot on the clutch is like hitting the brake. As in a auto its just constint power to the wheels. Would it be easy to swap from a manual to a auto?? Is it worth doing?? Are the auto trans storng??

A few experienced friends use autos and like them - so must be ok. Personally I prefer manual for variety of offroad conditions - find it gives me greater gear choice for different conditions, and is much better for hill descents. But there isn't too much in it and plenty of arguments either way - comes down to personal choice and the type of terrain you mostly drive in. Auto useful in sand - if it doesn't heat up?
Don't think it would be worthwhile swapping from manual to auto - most offroaders prefer manual - but again its by no means the rule. there are plenty of autos and some seriously well developed trucks with them too.

2 places autos are definatly better Long climbs where a gear change or 2 during the climb allow for better momentum,Soft sand where its impossible to change in a manual although this can overheat an auto. 2 places they are worse downhills although there are techniques to compensate and deep water. In a manual if water gets in you drain it when you get home but an auto will most likly need a rebuild by then. If you have an auto do fit an extra oil cooler and it lasts well. If you have a manual change the oil every 20000 or so and it lasts well. The difference between the 2 isnt enough to make the swap Im a manual fan as well but that doesnt mean my next car wont be auto

I just changed my 28 auto to manual about a month ago, and i have to say that i think it was better auto. The only reason i changed is that i couldnt get the part i needed for the auto (output shaft sensor) and this was causing all sorts of shift and torque converter problems so i changed to manual. The main reason i liked th auto better is the lag!, The lock up torque converter ment the engine was always on boost where as i cant belive how laggy it is now. I found offf roading better with the auto aswell for the same reason. I could get plenty of smoke off the rears with the auto too, not that its important to do that. It does have a little more grunt now though, especially up steep hills. Thats my thoughts anyway. Oh yeah the auto does suck up a lot of power aswell, when i dynoed it last it only made 56.5hp at the wheels on the P.I.T.S dyno.
