just wondering if all 3.1 4jg2 engines are intercooled as standard? sorry it seems like a silly question, but im asking because i know i have an import engine in my rodeo ute but im unsure now of what size it is. Ive always thought it was a 2.8, but it just sounds alot different. Its considerably quieter under the bonnet without the rattly diesel sound my brothers australian model rodeo has. It has a IHI RHF5 turbo with no signs of every having an intercooler fitted. thanks Dan

No not all the 3.1s are intercooled.
The reason yours is quieter is the MUs and Troopers run rubber timing belts and the Rodeos use gears.
If it is a 3.1...side by side an import 2.8 it will be quieter, the direct injection 2.8s suffer more diesel knock!
Matt.

H"i Dan first up what has it got on the in take manifold from the turbo to intake should read like 3100 turbo or 2800 turbo or similar. The Australian version of the 2.8 is a chain driven cam where the import where/are belt driven that is why they are quieter than the the Rodoes I believe. The 3.1's are quieter as they are "Indirect injection" where the 2.8's are "Direct Injection"
Hope this helps
Cheers Bruce

first look says 4jb1 but theres not enough in the pic to be certain. You would notice it if different driveing. the 4jg2 has better low down torque but doesnt rev as well and drinksmore gas

The exhaust side looks like a 2.8 rodeo manifold crossover are rodeo inlet looks import. No EGR pipe on exhaust side but the valves on the inlet side. Also MU motors have sound proofing on the sides of the block and tappet cover which makes them quieter
