If I remember correctly, the 4wd switch on a manual is on the right of the trans just in front of the transfer case.

OK so now I am getting annoyed. Pulled the cover off gear levers.........2x micro switches visible one on left by gear stick right one by transfer lever. Try unplugging and shorting them and makes no difference to light Because it was sort of intermittant before staying on I assumed it was electrical. There MUST be another switch somewhere, could one of you guys with a manual have a look for me please. Cheers Ian.

Aparantly there is a conector marked "h27" near the brake booster that conects the light to the control switch. Try disconecting this to see what happens. I assum its not stuck in 4wd. Check by putting in gear and climbing underneath to turn the front driveshaft

Thanks for that Alan.........unplugged everything around booster light still on. However the front drive shaft shouldn't turn with both front wheels on the ground should it? I jacked front then it turns, spin one wheel and other side goes opposite [means hubs not locked?] with back wheels down driveshaft spins [means centre diff not locked?] .
Anyway I am ready to give up on this damn light, but now you worried me a diff is locked!!

Try turning them forwards 3 turns then back the same If the hubs are unlocked turning one wheel should not affect the other. If your model has shift on the fly there is no free wheel hub as this is controlled by a box in the diff which also does the 4wd light

Have you got auto hubs or shift on the fly (SOF)? (Sorry if this is a dumb question but I've had a few people tell me they have auto hubs when the actually have SOF) If you have SOF the axle will look like the photo. Otherwise there will be a straight tube from the diff head to the CV housing. If you have SOF there will be a drive plate, about 10mm, and pressed steel cover on the end of the wheel hub. I've got SOF and had the 4wd light stay on. I discovered that the 4wd light is controlled by a proxcimity switch at the SOF clutch on the axle. I had broken a wire that controls the vaccuum solenoid so the SOF clutch was not disengaging. Note that the vaccuum holds the clutch apart so if you have no vaccuum (because there is no power to the solenoid) the clutch is engaged and the 4wd light comes on. Before you had issues did the 4wd light come on when you turned the key on and go out once you had started it? (Can you please put a location in your profile)

Big thanks Alan and Justin, the manual emailed by Justin explained everything, it was a vacuum issue that cleaning of rubber pipework seems to of fixed.
