Hey all,
I have been thinking of making a new air box for my 4jb1-T made from 3mm steel to lower the temp. It will be fitted with a huge pod fillter for high air flow. And will have all new intake tube made from steel to allso lower the temp. Will allso be fitting a snorkel.
Has anyone done this mod before?? (Plz post photo of it)
If so did you have good gain??
Does anyone think this is a bad mod if so why??
If anyone has a idea of how it should be made let me know.
thx kane

How will 3mm steel lower the temp. Your current airbox is plastic and under bonnet temps can be quite high. Plastic insulates better than steel. Your better off heat wise just fitting the snorkle. If you are looking for more airflow have a look through Polcats posts. He created an interesting setup running 2 filters in paralell

There is some sort of tape that you can put on your air box that will lower the temp.

First thought would be to buy a neoprene camping mat from the Warehouse and use this to line the box. Couple of big issues though. On the inside this could restrict airflow around the filter On the outside it could trap water rusting out the box. Personal I doubt you would get enough benefit to justify the $12 outlay on the foam mat. Once you get the snorkel you will be pushing cold air through at a rate that will not allow time to heat up very much. Also remember at max boost that the turbo raises temp by 30 to 50 degrees which is why you have an intercooler. There are after market airboxes available ie www.simota.com.au/HTML/Airfilterkits_a.htm(half way down page) that work

Hey holden,
I've done a custom pipe between the existing air box and turbo, and also modified the existing air box to fit a pod inside it, and fitted a snorkel i made. As geeves said, there is not really much point bothering trying to insluate the box as the air's not in there very long. Steel absorbs the heat, and holds it alot longer than alot of other materials, so all you would really be doing is weighing your truck down a bit more. For the pipe, i used the existing lid and bend off the air box and used 2.5 or 3" pipe (whatever size that bend comes out at). I put a small bend in it to clear the radiator hose, then a 90 degree bend and a eccentric reducer with a bit of straight (i had to make it as the turbo is a odd ball size), with a bit of flexi hose onto the turbo. I welded on a 3" ring inside the lid of the air box and use a k&n pod filter, i can't remember the part number but its 3" inlet and is rather short but fat. For the snorkel i just welded a 2.5" bend onto the side of the air box where the existing inlet was, and got rid of all those other boxes that hung of the side. I'll try post some pics, but i can never get it right so if you send me your email i'll send them striaght to you.
I think it was worth it as it is a far more stream-lined system, and the k&n filter catches all the fine dust, just have to keep it clean and oiled.
