It controls more than just the glow plugs. It also advances the injector timing and enables the cold start switch on the dash. With the sensor unplugged the advanced timing will cause diesel knock which isnt realy harmfull but can result in overheating. If the dash button is activated then the flap closes in the exhaust which will cause lack of power and overheating. ie not a good idea You could fit a momentary disconnect switch in the line to the sensor so you can push the button and hold while you start the car then release so all is back to normal. You also then can start the car warm without the long glow

i have all the cold start gear taken off my truck, just its seems to blow alot of black smoke when cold 9FIRST START IN THE MORNING),have had diesels before but my mu just seems to blow more than normal, thought disconnecting it might help with that first start when cold.would it help do you think?and is it still harmful with all the cold start gear removed.? Thanks

By cold start gear do you mean the exhaust flap only? The glow plugs are also for cold starts. No harm will come from removeing the cold start stuff and unless you run in sub 0 temps a lot very little difference will happen. If you have a 2.8 it will start without the glowplugs down to below 0 although it will run like a pig for a little while I rarely wait for the glow light to go out. The isuzu engine does smoke more than some engines when cold This is just the nature or the beast. It only has 18/1 compression to allow more turbo boost but the trade off is a smokey start

It should knock like a debt collector and might overheat. Diesel knock is not a lot different to pinking in a petrol car and can cause the same problems

It isnt a knock like a bad bearing. More like the pinking noise petrol cars make when you fill with the wrong gas but deeper at more solid sounding

If its at one narrow rev range its not this. I had a similar noise at 2200 which took over a year to track to a loose bolt on the cover on the intercooler
