After spending weeks replacing the rings in my 94 Bighorn I had just started out on my holidays with the caravan when the transmission ceased to transmit. I am going to replace it with a second hand one. Can someone tell me how to deal with the gear sticks, and any other tips. Thanks Ken

you can download the complete manual from my gmail. go to www.gmail.comlogin as isuzunz pass 4jb1turbo download the attachments from the 11 ubs emails put them in a folder then download either 7zip or izark from your favorite freeware site. (download.com is good) open the 001 file with izark or 7zip and a 100meg pdf file will apear which is everything you ever wanted to know plus a few extras

Thanks Geeves. The seller of the gearbox is a mechanic and gave me some advice. Hopefully I will manage. He was telling me he had just had a 4JG2 engine with damaged no 4 cylinder which is the same as I had. Perhaps This is a weakness of the engine. I think I will try to find that posting on Water Wetter which is supposed to improve cooling. Ken

I have the replacement second-hand gearbox in. It seems to go OK except it will not go into overdrive. Anyone got any ideas? Ken

PS It is difficult to read the dipstick with new oil in. Am I right checking it with engine running in Neutral. How much should it take with the gearbox dry? The torgue convertor was drained. Thanks Ken

Hi Ken,
Your transmission, like most import 1992-96 Bighorns, is probably a modified Toyota at-340e. This trans is also in Jeep Cherokee.
Sorry, don;t have capacities.

I once had an oil splashing problem. I couldn;t read the dipsick level as the oil level was too low and I could only see traces of oil. Stick a bit more oil in (say 500ml) and see if things settle down.

Got that sorted. I decided that you have to read both sides of the dipstick and take take the lowest level. I finished up putting 6 to 7 litres in. Still having problems with gearbox. Even though the gearboxes are identical the connections are different and I hope to get it sorted at a auto gearbox place on Tuesday. Overdrive selector and lockup and starting inhibitor don't work. I finally got the replacement gearbox working after an expensive visit to the transmission shop. Seemed to be going well. Got the caravan hitched on and away we went. About 100k down the road the same thing happened. No noises from the box, just stopped pulling. Fortunately there was room to pull off the road again. Got towed home and the vehicle is parked in the garage. I realize this gearbox is not made by Isuzu but I am mighty sick of this vehicle and all its problems. The last time it was running the left rear door window mechanism all fell to bits. so now it has a block of wood keeping it closed. I might write a story of all the things that have gone wrong with this beast but the moderators might not like it. Ken

With any luck its just the torque converter even though this is still a gearbox out job good luck. ps The whole purpose of this forum is for people to discuss there problems so why not write the whole tale. Just please try to be nice about it. The 2 single things that always seem to come up as a cause for premature failure are doctored mileages and the original Japanese owner not maintaining the truck like he should.
