Well the time has come to replace the Auto Hubs in the MU.
Just a quick one to see what the recommendation is for a replacment...

An old question but a good one….
I replace the Auto hubs on my 3.1TD with Manual Asins off a TF Rodeo. Cheep at $75 a side. Hunt around for good second hand ones. Do not pay too much... Also, there are superwinch hubs available, but I don’t know much about these. There are instructions on the Modifications page for replacing these. Check em out..
Replacing the hubs took about 45 mins a side. I use a high temp bearing grease that is water repelant. If you are about to head off to the local wrecker for a set of second hand ones. There are a few things that you should look out for.
1. Count the number of splines on yours and get one that match. There are two types (at a guess 19 splines and 15 splines someone may correct me here as I cannot remember exact number). 2. When looking at any replacements…. make sure the mechanism turns freely and does not feel worn. Look inside the hub for visual signs of wear. This includes chipped teeth, teeth worn, spring wear/broken…. 3. Fit new seals. I was not able to buy seals with mine so I made some with gasket paper. Its quite easy to tap out a new gasket with a small hammer. Lucky part is they have not leaked yet either. 4. Also pack them with good quality grease b4 bolting them on.
Overall it’s a easy do it yourself job with just a few tools. The hardest part is getting the cir-clip back in or as I prefer the jesus clip… But you get that. Anyway, check out the Modifications page for instructions – MU Superwinch Hub conversion. Just do steps 2 to 9 if they are Aisins.
Important note: A huge concern is getting water in the hubs/bearings…If you want to reduce/stop the amount of water you get in your hubs/bearings, leave them cool down b4 you jump into a river crossing. Especially if you have been out giving your truck a real good work out. Air expands when it gets hot, so if you cool things real quick when your in axle deep under water it will suck in water where ever it can. Water and bearings don’t mix. Give them a little time to cool before jumping in.

James Wright aint happy with the super winch hubs so it might be wise to stay with the asins I have removed one of my hubs after it started sticking tiped a cup full of beef gravey out of the hub due to the seal in the back of the hub leavered the hub off due to the rust fully overhauled it in under 45 minuites so they are quite easy to change

This may sound like a dumb question, but do I have to completely take off my Auto Locking hubs to find out how many splines there are? I don't want to start pulling things apart prematurely

If its a mu its 17 Promise everything after 89 was 17 except maybe some Ausi jackeroos and rodeos

If its a mu its 17 Promise Yeah, it's a 95 Mu. I also just found my User Manual under one of the seats... but it's useless because I don't read Japanese. Seems a lot different to the one on the C.I. webpage though!

That one might be a bit cut down but all the important stuff is there. Capital Books in Waring Taylor st used to sell a full translation but dont know if they still do. It was about 60 bucks though
