???I started off with a cigarette lighter that would not work so rather than pull everything apart I put a meter in and found the centre pin is Positive. Is that normal. I want to plug a GPS in and don't want to do any damage.

any idea how to take out the socket so i can replace it? Mine's dead as a door nail

I would be very suprised if there is a problem with the socket - they tend not to die unless someone has jammed something in the socket that wasnt supposed to fit in. If isnt working, then first thing to check is the fuse, and if that is no good then work back along the wire, might be a broken wire somewhere
