From what I understand (just what I've read here!) the turbo on the 3.1 is NOT serviceable unfortunately. I don't know costs etc. but if you looking to get this type of work done, and you are on Auckland's North Shore, I recommend "Alltech Diesel & Turbocharger". Probably not the cheapest but definitely know there stuff and are very easy to deal with. They're at 110 Wairau Road, website: www.turbo.co.nz

They are not servicable so you might as well wait for it to die completely unless this is likely to be at a highly inconvenient time (anywhere from 1 week took 2 years from now). If you want drive in drive out service then the above post is a good start. If you can do the change yourself or have a tame mechanic pm Powertruck He imports the turbos through his work but as hes in Chch it would have to be pay and post

Mine has been making noise for years and years. If I don't warm it up, I drive very easy until it's warm. I can hear the difference between warm and cold oil. Also got timer on shutdown.
I had mine looked at years ago and the bloke said there was movement in the turbine bearing. Also, 2 weeks ago a diesel specialist said it sounded like a dry bearing. He also gave me another 1.5psi boost to 13psi.
You might be lucky like me, and hang on to your cash for a while, or, have to get a new one soon. I've seen turbo's on ebay for the 3.1.

Same here, no play in the bearings though, but its been making some noises for about 2 and a half years now and sounds like a jet when closing down, yup I let it cool down first.
Using a good oil and changing every 3OOOmiles works for me.

The noise on shutdown is caused by the failure of an internal heat shield This exposes the bearing and seal to full heat so it eventualy fails either by siezeing causeing loss of boost or by seal failure causeing lots of smoke

Mine sounds like a jet too.
I'll know what to look for now when it fails.
