noticed that my 93 bighorn's 4wd indicator lamp blinks even if the tcase is in 2h. tried it in 4h and the lamp is steadily lit. read somewhere that it may be a vacuum leak due to the auto hubs or ,worse, an electrical problem. afraid of doing some major damage if the problem doesn't get sorted out soon. had crawled underneath and as far as i could tell, all the lines and hoses seemed fine. hoping for some help.

Is this an auto or manual? Do you have auto freewheel hubs or a diff with the disconnect built in. If you have the disconnect this is a box on the side of the front diff with a vacume line and wires going into it Most likly this is the issue

it has an auto tranny. i should have menioned that it is my first 4wd. so i'm not familiar with freewheel auto front hubs or ones with the built in disconnects. i have seen the box that you have mentioned with the 2 electrical lines and a hose running to a vacuum diaprahm with a return hose. thought of just replacing the hoses. but what if its electrical?

The electrics are just an electrically controlled vacuum solenoid that drives it from the 4wd selector and a sensor to see if its done its thing. My money is on the sensor but its worth checking properly. No damage will be done but you might be useing more fuel. With car in 2wd neutral jack up the front wheel closest to the free wheel box. Turn this wheel and watch the driveshaft. It should not turn. Try again in 4wd and it should turn. This is a very basic test

i was not sure if the test was to be conducted with the engine running or off so i performed it under both instances and the driveshaft did not turn when the tcase was either in 2h or 4h. just to make sure i got the right wheel jacked up, i then repeated the whole procedure on the other side with the same results. a mate suggested that i have the car lifted to see if the front wheels will spin in 4h and they did do so. however, the 4wd indicator now just stays lit the whole time. made sure that the tcase lever is in 2h and even repeatedly tried moving forward and reversing to no avail. now more baffled than ever.

Sounds like something wrong in the activation of the free wheel. There is info about this in the manual but its vague. Might be easiest to consult the experts. If you can turn round on a gravel surface without the front wheels leaving big marks there will be no damage done by driving except for extra fuel use

guess it is time to be more prudent than brave. better to let the experts have a go at it. at least it is good to know that no real damage will be suffered by the drivetrain. will keep you posted on the succeeding events. again, thanks a lot for the help.
