Had to get my tow bar fabricated for my requirments. You will have trouble with the roof racks without drilling. Have a look at Rihno or Rolla.

I was checking out tow bars and could get a heavy duty Hayman Reece (sp?) and I think it was a straight fit. Was about $400 too (Sydney, Au)
I don't think there's any red tape for a tow bar in Australia.
Cheers, G.

My MU has Rolla racks fitted, they look great and do the job well. But yes, drilling was involved. Bars n Racks at Brookvale fitted them for me.
You should be able to pick up a tow bar that fits straight on.

RE: Roof Rack I recently went to a roof rack specialist (Brisbane) and they told me that the only removable rack for the MU is the THULE brand which cost around $380 Australian. try the Thule website and search for your MU Model under "ROOf RACK GUIDE" www.thule.com/frames.asp?id=1884Most places can order these in, takes about a week or so. For the same price fitted I thought best to get a permanent sliding track from rhino, they look better and can hold a slightly heavier load. Best of luck Chris

Chris is right the Thule is the only removable one I've seen and cost a reasonable sum. (Also looks like scaffolding on top of you Truck). I had Rola on my first MU and Rhino Sportz on my second. If you whip the roof lining out before you take it in you can check they seal the holes properly when they rivet them on. The will bolt them if you ask but to be honest rivets if done properly are fine. The positioning is interesting, when I got my first Rola's I went to the Rola factory and they had a guy come out and look at the truck and he said not to put one on the very back. Yet Bar & Racks at Brookvale have done this without an issue. I have my rear bar installed in the middle directly over the main internal roof bar. I then fitted two packing spacers between the internal bar and the roof to support the mounts. J

Your not wrong there on the scaffolding comment Justin, Thule racks just look,….?....WRONG. (Sorry to anyone who has them)? I would go for a fixed mount in the sports option in rhino or rola racks. Could also go the sports track mount so that you can move the racks or take them right off, like I did. When enquiring just make sure that they use a generous amount of water sealant on the drilled holes/rivets, some places will also give a quick spray of rust prevention on the hole and then seal it and rivet. I would not be concerned about drill holes in roof if done correctly by a qualified 4X4 retailer. As for the tow bars,……..? Ask the wreckers, who knows you might find a good cheap one there.
Cheers Chris

Yep I have the THULE roof scaffolding and wont put them on unless desperate, not desparate often!!
They are ok but you wouldnt leave them up there and they end up being a foot apart!!! The distance from the front to the rear of your door!!! Too close!
Go for the permanent ones they look great and just make sure they are installe dproperly!
As for thge towbar, Hayman Reece dotn have one for a MU, but they do have ones for the Jackaroo and they fit perfectly!! Dont go for the Frontera it is close but not nearly as good as the Jack one!!

Hey Matt,
That Jakaroo bar, assume it would be for the same year model as the MU? ie 93MU = 93Jakaroo?
Cheers, Adrian.

Adrian,
My old man owned a 97 Jack and now a 2000 (widebody) Jack and ?I sat it beside my MU which I custom modified a Frontera to fit.
Either of the Jackaroos would have been a PERFECT fit!! Im spewin, it cost me $300 and then a day chopping and welding to fit the frontera. While the Jack one would sit flush with the underside of the rear chassis rail and apart from the standard holes you have to drill and fit the threaded plates(supplied) its too easy!
The Pajero one is a perfect fit but it only bolts to the holes in the rear of the chassis rail, personally I like to have the removeable tongue etc of the Hayman Reece HD ones. Gives you extra snatch points and some solid rear protection (been hit before and not a scratch!!)
Goodluck Matt.

Towbars somtimes make rear impacts worse but generaly they help. Ive been hit twice in the rear First was an older Sigma It rode up the towbar hiting the spare wheel destroying the rear door His car was also written off even though he drove home. I know he was doing less than 10kph as we had only moved forward 2 car lengths at a round about. Total cost to his insurance for my bighorn 4000. second rear ending was a Diamonte (dont you hate Mitsubishies ) All the impact went on the towbar I got a new towbar and a scratched bumper from his insurance He got a free tow truck ride

has beeen a while since i originally posted this, however i have only just fitted the bar to my mu!, just thought i would pass on this info on so that anyone else my be able to use it. firstly apparently h & r only make the heavy duty bars now for the frontera and jack they dont make the smaller ones which were supposed to fit straight on...... the heavy bars dont fit straight on but will go on with some f ing around and a nine inch grinder ..... i chose the hayman reece heavy duty jackaroo bar and cut off the supports 10 mm behind the second bolt hole- leaving two on the passinger side and one plus the tow hook bracket on the drivers. , it then sat just behind the spring hangers but sat an inch back further then perfect, no holes line up so you need to drill the three into the chassis, you also need to bolt through the tow hook as a spacer and use the front bolt hole on the bar through the back hole on the tow hook bracket on the truck also turning the hook ass about and upside down ............. then its on............sort of..... i wasnt happy with the fact that the bar was only on with four bolts so i had a plate made up and welded on upright on the top of the bar and bolted through the threaded plates behind the step...... yes there is holes behind there!! where one of those small pajero bars would probably bolt on easyly but i dont think id trust it.......... oh and you need to take off the bumpers and step to do this and slightly modify them to go back on................. apart from that it was a piece of piss.......... have fun ;D
