The mud truck has been getting a bit warm lately so I took the radiator out to clean it.After blasting 6mm of Thompson's track off both sides I found that the fan has bounced off it.Again.The last time it punched a hole in it so this is my spare. So it's time for an electric fan.I'll be able to switch it off for water and deep mud. It'll be on the outside so if I forget to switch it off in water the blades will pull away from the radiator rather than into it.I'll be using an after market fan [I'd rather use a second hand Falcon or holden one but the wrecker probably won't take the Supercheap vouchers I got for Christmas].Does anyone know ifI can use one of the temperature sensors on the motor to control it or should I get a separate thermostat? The alternator is getting shifted to the top cause I'm tired of that filling with mud too. Harry.

Most factory fan setups use a separate thermostat in the bottom tank. You might be able to fit a thermostat in the drain plug hole or get a radiator specialist to fit one for you. With the rad out it shouldnt take 30 min to do

I got an adjustable one from Supercheap today. The bulb on the end of the capilliary slides in between the top hose and it's spigot on the radiator and then the hose is tightened onto the tube .It is suggested that if the connection LEAKS TOO MUCH to put some sealant in the join!I'm thinking of getting a piece of 1/4 inch id copper tube soldered into the header tank for the bulb to fit into. There were no fans left in Cambridge so they' getting one from another shop. Harry.

Try running it always on for a few days before modding the tank just in case it doesnt push enough air.

I thought I would show what I did when I put thermo fans on the MU Take the old fan of I used 2 10” $34 ea at Supercheap fan at the top of the radiator they just fit Then I used a jaycar temperature switch kit (kc-5381) $29.95 you could use a Davies craig 0401 Thermatic Fan Switch I also used a old tap too mount the temperature probe in Then wired it up I was lazy and used a ignition power wire on the wiper motor to power the switch

I thought I would show what I did when I put thermo fans on the MU Brilliant timing on this post, I am in the middle of the same mod on my Bighorn. I need to stop this from happening again while I am fording!! I thought though that the aftermarket fans were pushing air fans that were ment to be mounted on the other side of the radiator? I will check into that now!!

Answered my own question re the pushing/pulling fan, the after market ones cover both by being able to reverse both the blades and polarity, next problem I have is the moths in my wallet are strongly against the fact that the cheapest I can find a 10" fan in NZ is Super cheap at $79.00 , if I put in two I really dislike the $160.00 price tag!!! Even for a 16" the cheapest is them at $109.00 Oh well, I will keep looking!

Might be time for a walk round the wreckers with measurements in hand. Ive never tryed the cheap fans but always thought the motors look very small. Will they cool adequately crawling up a 45deg track on a hot sunny day (if we ever get another one) with the radiator half full of the last mud bog. You both have the same beast as me and I don't believe you treat it that much harder than I do. How come ive never kissed the radiator with the fan or have I just tempted fate. Since you have removed the aircon can you just move the radiator forwards a little

Fitting the controller is going to be an act.The top of the radiator is the first place to run out of water when there's a leak and I don't know if steam will start the fan, and that's when you least want to lose the fan.Maybe that's why the manufacturers put the switch/thermostat at the bottom. Also there isn't much room to fit the controller amongst the air filter housing, the overflow bottle and the back of the headlight, and that's as far as the capilliary will reach.I may just rig up something temporary until I can get the radiator modified. The fan hasn't turned up yet so there's no panic. Harry.
