It amazes me just how economical the 2.8 motor can be. Have done maybe 135,000ks in the my 2.8s yet still astonished at how good they are on diesel. Did three tankfull fuel tests in recent weeks and logged fraction over 34mpg or 8.3L/100ks. This is lots of 70-80kph driving, plus round town. Very impressive for a near 2 tonne truck - about the same as my little mitsi car!
3.1 also quite good when compared to a few other diesels in other trucks, but I love topping up the tank on the old 2.8 when, as today, you get 647ks on 53.8 litres. And the speedo is accurate - has been calibrated for its certification.
My wallet loves it..

They sure are. Lifted with 33 Muddies loaded inside and rack loaded to the hilt it still returned 11l/100 for a trip with some city and a long run at 110km/hr!

I will vouch for that too!!! They are super economical. I get around 8.7 @ 110km/h, most of my driving is done at that speed. With the low sulphur BP Ultimate diesel, it comes down to around 8 after about 3 tanks.
That is of course with no air con. Add that and it goes up to around 9.5
