I know that the most common way of driving off road is the 10 and 2 hand position on the steering wheel making sure that you don't hook your thumbs over the wheel brace part so that if the wheel grabs it doesn't break your thumbs. BUT what are the thoughts on using steering wheel knobs? Are these classed as thumb breakers as well?

Can you still buy these? The way they clamp to the wheel would damage any soft wheel ie any wheel less than 30 years old. Also they could not be tightened enough to be secure Dont know anyone that has used these but would expect a lack of control if you hit a bump

Have seen them on sale at repco, but yes the are a clasp type with a rubber insert to minimise movement, i have a (stupid) wood steering wheel. so it would work okay. But no point putting one on unless there is an advantage, IE, hill climbs where you could have a hand on the gear stick and and on the steering knob or sumthink like that.
It make driving our forklift easy, but then a forklift is not a 4x4 ah lol. But in thinking bout it now, your probably quite right about losing control when you hit a bump, or if the wheel gets in a rut and pulls back.
On a side note. 3.30min shows that washout you were talkin bout.

Thinking about it I have seen them on the odd rally truck but they need to turn the wheel quick sometimes and each hazard is barely one minute of driving before they can rest.

As geeves said there are a few rally trucks with them on but a lot of those have fully hydrolic streeing, where you get no feed back and hence no broken fingers, wrists etc.
I think it is elegal to have them in a vechile for on road use unless you have a disablity.
Personally I think they are very dangerous and wouldn't recommend them as they can do some seriuos damage to fingers and wrists.

Agree with mulovers comment - unsafe for 4wding when steering wheel can and commonly will lurch violently. Wouldn't use one and hv never seen one in clubs.

I have read all your input with some interest.
I have a wheel spinner and quite frankly would not be without it. I checked it out first and found they are not illegal in NZ. There are some however, who would like to outlaw them. I really have no idea why.
I first mounted the spinner in the recommended position on the circumference of the wheel. It soon became apparent that this was not the best place. When using the steering wheel in the normal way, the spinner would catch on anything in the way (like legs) and compromise steering. I think this is the main area for those who have a problem with spinners.
I then remounted the spinner to one of the wheel spokes. The effect was that the interference problem disappeared but the force required to operate the spinner increased. Had to develop stronger arms.
Provided I have forward momentum I can go from lock to lock in a moment.
I recommend wheel spinners for 4wd drivers who need maximum steering at low speeds.

MMM that is a good idea i might have to invest in one for the mutroll i reckon it will come in handy. considering that i drive forklifts to load my truck each day i should have given it more thought as i pretty much drive the fork by holding the spinner 95% of the time cheers muvit
