I have often wondered whether my speedo had been wound back. When I replace the rings I measured the bore wear as 6 thousands of an inch on the diameter. There is 110,000k on the clock. Does this match up? Ken

They are chrome liners so wear shouldnt be an issue in a normaly maintained engine specs for the bore are Grade Mark Inside Diameter A 95.425 – 95.440 (3.7569 – 3.7575) B 95.441 – 95.450 (3.7575 – 3.7579) C 95.451 – 95.460 (3.7579 – 3.7583) D 95.461 – 95.475 (3.7583 – 3.7589)
Things that cause bore wear are faulty or missing air cleaner or air leak in intake bad diesel esspecialy if used on lots of short trips.(the sulphur in older spec diesel forms acid in a cold engine) Dirty oil lying speedo (110000km on a 15 year old car?)
If you still have the old bearings and rings take them to an engine reconditioner. He will tell you lots about your engine

6thou really should of meant changing the liners as well as pistons and rings. A big expensive job on such a low mileage car. Add to that the gearbox and other issues and things start sounding a little like the previous owners were not that good at preventative maintenance

Thanks for the info. I have often wondered what the Japanese do with all these 4WDs before they send them over here. Ken

I dont know if this is true or not but I have heard storys of 4wds in Japan fitted with generators which they then power thee houses from leaveing the engines running 24/7 Then you get low mileage but realy the engine has done huge work

I would not have thought that a likely use for a 4WD. Surely it would be cheaper to buy a small generator set than a low milage 4WD. You would also get mains voltage output. Ken
