Ive heard bad things happen to the engine oil and injectors when diesel motors do short trips day after day? i warm it up before use (about 5 min) but have heard they dont like to run to long without load? i change oil every 5000Kms i really look after this motor and its only used in the weekends. BUT because of uncertain times $$$$$$$ im thinking of using it for my daily driver but it would only travel about 10km twice a day i get to 100km for about 1 minute then back to 50kms (and no i cant take the bike ive got kids to drop off) lol if doing these short trips are going to do harm to my truck ill keep the car! any advice about what i could do to protect engine/drive-line from harm would be cool the better half thinks im nuts cause when we take it out to play i give it heaps ;D buts thats what i got it for

It will be all right, my truck does the same distance everyday and its going well. I just make sure I take it for a good run once a month and load up the engine to keep the bores and rings in good nick

The answer to the comment in brackets would be buy them bikes as well
Mine spent a couple of years doing even shorter trips than that with no apparent harm. As long as it gets a good trip fairly regularly it should be ok If worryed reduce the oil change interval to say 4000km. The problem with 2 cars is the one that does all the daily work also dosnt get in the garage so rusts away. That and 2 insurances/regos etc. I keep looking at my toyota and thinking is it justified but then I need to go somewhere in it on a monday morning after a late muddy sunday and think Im glad Im not takeing the beige( dark blue) truck as it smells funny

My parents had a petrol 81 Mitsi Sigma from new that did about 3km a day with the odd (weekly) longer trip. We changed the oil every six months or when due on distance, which ever came first. I ended up with this car, used it for a few years then sold it to my aunt who used it and sold it to a friend of ours. It was still going strong in 1998 (17 years) without major engine work when it got written off in an accident. Odo about 240,000km
If you are doing low km it is more important than ever you change oil regularly. I would recommend six monthly.
