K so I'm new to Isuzu, 4x4 driving, and New Zealand...total noob right I'm picking up my 89 Bighorn tommorrow afternoon, but it has a problem with the alternator, she runs ok (apart from turbo not kicking in...at all) But I will need this on day to day runs so NEED to get the alt fixed asap! Where do I begin to look? I'm in Wellington NZ any suggestions would be very helpful, it's the 2.8 4jb1 motor. Also needs a new rocker cover but that's not as urgent! Sounds knackered I know, but I did get her cheap! Thankyou all.

Not sure where you would get one rebuilt in Wellington. Geeves can probably help you there. We get our parts through Napier Auto Supplies, they seem to have a good range of Isuzu parts and we know people there. Might be worth checking out wreckers around your area. Or if you plan to run lots of accessories it might be a good opportunity to upgrade to a bigger alternator, one of ours in our MU is a Mitzi 120amp, not sure what the std bighorn one is.

Hey, I'm not entirly sure what's wrong with it, the gentleman I'm buying it from said it's not charging the batt, he's charging it each night and running it around during the day.
I'm actually in the Waiarapa, but as it still runs ok, I can take it anywhere in the area.
I'm picking it up today so should have a bit more info soon.

When the alternator fails it quite often takes out the charge relay as well. If its not charging and the ignition light is not on then this is the cause. The bad news is that 8/10 this happens because of a burnt stator which means alternator. If the lights on then it may be just bushes which can be fixed. The really bad news is that alternators for these are not cheap new or even second hand due to the vacuum pump. You can fit other alternators and leave the current for the vacuum but you lose the air con. If you mechanicaly minded you can get cheap alternators from Picapart in Taita but you have to take them out youself if these is any there at the moment. Ask how to get it out if you go this way These is a trick

I got it yay Drives ok, bought a batt charger today, currently in the garage charging for the night! I found an alternator with the vacume from a guy in the t&e, I got it for $25 showed a friend who's rather mechanically minded, he said it looks sweet, will pick up a rocker cover from repco asap, and do them both at the sme time, hopefully later this week! Little nervous though, it took the Rimutakas no problem but hell it was slow, could hardly get it over 40kph! Guess I'm gonna have to get used to pulling over to let people go!

I would look at the turbo before spending too much money. Is it jammed or is something else killing the boost. Turbos are not cheap.

Not too sure, the guy I bought it from had no idea what we were talking about when we said there was no turbo, he's had it for 18month and just thought it was 'that' slow!
My friend who I mentioned was quite mechanical, tightened a few basic screws (some where 6 revolutions loose!) and we got a bit of a kick from it... I'm going to take it out and give it a bit of a clean...
Worst case we will just pick up a second hand one from Pickapart about $70 plus I believe.
Any suggestions would of course be VERY welcome!
On that note, I want to thank you all for your input, it is certainly very appreciated!

A couple of other things to check re turbo. First is air cleaner. Esspecialy if a snorkle has been fitted the paper elements stop flowing after they have been wet and if rain gets down the snorkle the element gets wet. Long term think about a Finer filter or K&N but for now a new paper element doesnt cost much Second There is a restrictor in the exhaust which can jam in the closed position result is what you have. If its jammed remove it and seal the holes. It only realy does anything usefull in temps under -5 Third if youve checked the turbo and it can be spun freely by finger pressure the turbo is ok but the waste gate might be playing up. You can try removeing the line between the wastegate and turbo and blocking the turbo end If the turbo kicks into life you know where to look
