I seem to have fried the alternator on my 2.8 Mu, and I have had the offer of an alternator off a deregoed Trooper but I'm not sure whether the Trooper is a 2.8 or 3.1 (owner doesn't know).
Will the Hitachi LR180-501 80 Amp alternator off a 3.1 diesel fit onto a 4JB1-T 2.8 diesel?
I don't want to travel a fair distance and spend a couple of hours getting the alternator off only to find it won't fit. But if it does, I'm all for more amperage from an alternator.
Cheers!

I've been told by a local Isuzu wrecker that the alternators are slightly different and the LR180-501 off a 3.1 has a longer shaft off the back. Several alternator websites give a different model alternator for the 3.1 so I really need to know from someone who has tried to put an alternator off a 3.1 onto a 2.8.

The longer shaft just means you need to get the vacuum pump as well and maybe the pipework. Also the plugs are different so theres a little mucking round as well. Other than that it should fit. Whats wrong with your alternator.Once you have it out its cheap to have an auto sparky tell you if its worth fixing(brushes are cheap and can be done on the bench quickly). Most wont charge for a look as long as they think they will get the job

i have a 3.1 and not long after i got it the alternator started over charging, luckly the previous owner gave me a few spare parts including a spare alternator, but i think the alternator was for a 2.8 as the pump on the back is smaller and the splines are different so couldnt fit the old pump and the oil hose to it was abit short but just managed to fit, other than that its been fine.

Most wont charge for a look as long as they think they will get the job Dad's a retired sparky but can't seem to motivate himself to have a look at it. The problem arose after the crankshaft sprocket saga. I had undone the lead from the temp sensor so the glowplugs were activated, and then undid the negative terminal from the battery and took it on and off the battery terminal with the ignition on to see exactly what relays were clicking. I didn't think it would ruin anything but something got upset because the next thing I knew was that I had a heap of warning lights across the dash and no charging. My first thought was the relay so I got another from an Isuzu wrecker but with that one no lights come up at all - including the charge light, and it still won't charge. I presume I've popped the diodes in the alternator. If they're anything like a Lucas alternator, you only have to sneeze at them for the diodes to pop! I know where there is a partially wrecked Bighorn which was offered to me, hence the question about a 3.1 alternator. The added bonus of 80 amps instead of 50 is also a factor.

Lucas gets called prince of darkness for very good reason. I would still take the alternator to a sparky to test. Even diodes are easy to fix but before doing this check to make sure you havnt knocked a wire off

I got a hitachi alternator off trademe a while ago, it was advertised as a 80 amp for a bighorn i think. It came with the vacume pump on it already, and as geeves said, the plugs where slightly different but after a little mucking around it was all hooked up It was a very tight squeeze but it fitted in. If you can get a mesurement of the bottom mount and the distance from the mount to the face of the pully to compare with yours. If they line up then it should work.

Thanks all,
I bought a 2nd-hand alternator for $100 off a 2.8 in the end. I had a look at the Hitachi alternator wiring (really stupid system) and after talking to an auto electrician who actually knew what he was talking about (very rare), deduced that my alternator was fried by the last owner.
A bit of keyhole surgery and 3 hours later she was charging. Nice not to have to hang a battery charger out the window every night, and I can use my electric windows at last!
