hey guys, i own the 2.8 4jb1t isuzu mu. ive just bought over from new zealand isuzu bits wrecking yard, a top mount cooler off a trooper. i am doing the install myself, just wondering if there is anything i should look out for. but its doesnt look hard at all. also what is the difference in power and torque from adding the intercooler. i would be interested to see pics or stat sheets from mu owners who have already done this modification. thanks guys

On its own its supposed to be worth about 4kw which you would be lucky to notice. It does however cool the air which is good for the life of the engine. I dont know how this is measured. If its measured on a bench then there are further gains from the extra cooling available at road speeds

It only makes a difference on the open road unless you are going to put a fan on top of it like a few of us have done. You will not notice much of a gain but it is there. I find the main gain is my truck seems to hold its cruising speed better and requires less boost pressure to do so. Some people say its not worth the effort, but i have noticed slight gains and it does help to keep the motor cooler.

I reckon my Mu pulls a bit better and it is worth probably half a gear on some hills. Not a huge difference though. Fuel economy improved slightly on average. At the very least (once fitted) its free horsepower. I would fit it to another Mu if I had one.

thanks guys for your feed back. once i get the intercooler that the guys from the isuzu bits wreking yard in new zealand are sending over, i will let yous know how it goes. it should be good though. i just rebuilt the whole motor and everything has been serviced along with the fuel pump being rebuilt and also all injectors. it also has 2 & half inch free flow exaust system on it.so all those minor mods should get it running really nice. ive also been looking into getting the fuel pump and boost a little higher to incresae the perfomance. but i will probably take it to a deisel tuner.

It is deffinately worth adjusting the fuel pump and turning up the boost, you can either set it at say 16psi and leave it (i have had mine set at 16 for 4 or 5 years and had no problems), or you can have an in-cab one and adjust it as you see fit. There is a small pressure relief valve on top of the motor coming off the inlet manifold you will need to block off as this can open at around 14-15 psi.
Now you have a better air flow through your motor with the exhaust it may be worth looking at a high flow air filter.
Adjusting the fuel makes a big difference and is worth doing once you have done everything to the motor you want to.
Also worth doing is blocking off all the egr valves as these can sometimes leak and cause loss of performance. (if you haven't all ready)

i have blocked off the egr valves already when i was re building the motor. also have a k&n free flow air filter. each time i did a mod you could feel the difference it gave in power and torque. now just need the intercooler. once that is all on i will have a little more confidence in uppering boost and fuel ratios, as it keeps cooler and breathes alot better. i was only thinkin of getting it to14 psi just to be safe.which is about 2 - 3 psi over stock boost. should be good when all done.
