Hi, I have a 96 3.1 Turbo diesel Wizard, auto. Twice recently it has failed to turn over. All of the dash lights come on but the solenoid to release the selector from P fails to operate but I am able to chage gear. After changeing right through from P to L several times all works fine and it started. Also when cold and put into R, the R on the dash does not light and I get no reversing lights.
Anyone got any clues?

Ive heard of this twice recently Once on a Volvo and once on a BMW. In the Volvos case it was solved by cleaning the slide contacts in the selector console. In the BMW it ended up with a full rebuild. The good news is the Volvo has the same auto. If you open up the gear selector you will find either a set of micro switches or a large slide switch. Clean and adjust and all should be good. These switches operate relays but as you have 2 faults my money is on the switch. You can bypass the neutral switch as it sounds you have tried but in that state its potentially dangerous as its possible to start in gear. It will also fail a WOF like that if the mechanic notices
