Hi; My friends turbo sounds like a turbine winding down when he turns the key off on his 96 wizard. Can you tell me if this is normal.

Its not really normal, although it is quite common, You will probably find there is a leak in a gasket on the exhaust end of the turbo somewhere, or there is a small crack. If you have a really good look you may be able to see a bit of black where its leaking.

Your answer is true on the 2.8 but unfortuanatly on the 3.1 theres anouther cause which is more likely. Inside the turbo on the 3.1 theres a heat shield that burns through at about 160000km. This is the first symptom. It might last up to 18 months but might fail completely any time before that. The turbo will then either seize causing massive power loss or the internal seals will go dumping oil into the exhaust (big cloud). The only fix is new turbo but you dont need to do it before it dies unless you dont like the idea of being stuck somewhere. Further damage to the engine is possible but unlikley.
